When I was about fifteen, I dated someone pretty briefly.

He was seventeen.

We had known each other about a year and it was light dating.

We'd see each other maybe once a week.

Or every two weeks.

And one night we had a date and he never showed up.

This was the day before cell phones.

But there were regular phones and he could have called and he didn't.

And that was the last time we ever communicated was his lack of showing up.

This person actually was a celebrity and I sometimes see his picture.

And that's all I think about when I see his picture.

And I wish him well but it's hard to forget.

I remember at the time, I felt really hurt and really vulnerable.

And in my mind I tried to start making it okay.

Maybe this, maybe that.

There literally was no excuse.

That's just how he chose to end the relationship.

Having this happen was a really harsh lesson in rejection.

And I guess that was kind of a turning point for me in realizing other people's unacceptable

behavior never has to be made okay, especially if it's coming from a romantic partner

or potential partner.

What's interesting is that even though I'm an adult and I've had accomplishments in work

and in romance and in life, it still hurts to be rejected.

That place that gets hurt, doesn't really change.

I think the way that I deal with rejection now is I have a sense of hope and I have a

sense of faith that I'm worthy and I will be okay.

And it doesn't feel as devastating as it did when I was fifteen.
