Greetings from Pune, India!
00:19
I'm with my good friend David of David's Been
Here.
00:20
And we are going to go and devour some street
food here in Pune, India.
00:22
It is all about the Indian Street Food tonight.
00:27
Let's get after it man.
00:29
Maharashtrian food.
00:31
(Traffic and honking sounds)
00:42
So what are we having?
01:05
So first of all we are at a place called Khau
Galli.
01:14
Khau Galli literally translates into 'eat
street'.
01:16
Yeah, Khao means eat and Gali means a small
lane.
01:20
I like the sound of that.
01:25
And you have every kind of street food out
here ranging from Pani Puri to Bhel Puri to
01:29
Some chicken probably on the way.
01:37
But yeah today we are having the Masal Puri
out here.
01:38
The Masal Puri is more like.
01:42
The puri are small kind of tennis ball kind
of thing.
01:44
Pingpong kind of size puri.
01:48
And it is filled with masala.
01:50
Masal is like it is a chickpea mix.
01:53
It has the spices on.
01:56
And then they add onion, tomatoes, sev.
01:58
Exciting moment my very first time to try
Masala Puri.
02:03
These look fabulous.
02:07
And look at how colorful they are man.
02:08
You get the crunch.
02:15
That is the first thing I'm noticing.
02:16
Lots of different ingredients like this is
just really good.
02:20
Really nice way to start.
02:24
I mean we had so many spicy foods earlier
on in the day.
02:25
So it is nice to have something a little bit
more mild.
02:29
These are 30 rupees.
02:30
So like really affordable and you get 6 of
them right?
02:32
That is really good man.
02:36
Alright you guys are going in for some now.
02:40
It is very crunchy.
02:49
Good way to get our appetite going.
02:51
Out here for Pani Puri it is a little bit
different.
02:56
They hand over one piece to you.
02:58
Oh perfect so just hand it to us.
03:00
Dude I love Pani Puri.
03:04
Tried it for the first time a couple of nights
ago in Mumbai.
03:06
It is basically this carved out little ball.
03:08
They have two different kinds of chutneys
in there.
03:12
Look at all of the sauce.
03:14
Like if I sway it back and forth you can actually
see it.
03:15
I mean you put it in your mouth it just explodes.
03:17
That is actually quite sweet and a tiny bit
sour.
03:24
I could just like pop like 20 of these in
a row.
03:32
They are that good.
03:34
And what is the price of this?
03:35
Ah, this is 20 bucks (rupees) so 25 or 30
cents US.
03:36
This is the thing you have to try when you
come to India.
03:41
Definitely it is like one of the ultimate
Indian street foods.
03:45
It is the ultimate.
03:47
You can smell the pani from here.
03:49
They mix the sauce.
03:52
David is about to try this.
03:59
You ready for it bro?
04:01
Oh I love this thing.
04:02
This is like throw a little onion on top.
04:03
This is what street food in India is all about
man.
04:07
Just easy small snacks.
04:10
Oh my gosh the pani puri.
04:12
It is like sweet and then it is spicy.
04:17
Oh my god mouthwatering for sure.
04:29
Gotta get some onions man.
04:30
So here is what I do.
04:35
I add on some raw onions.
04:39
You add some onions.
04:40
And so do you find that makes it a bit more
juicy and refreshing?
04:42
And it is a one-biter.
04:47
I remember you saying that you were eating
this everyday for a while.
04:48
I used to have a favorite joint.
04:51
And we were like 4 of us every single day.
04:54
Every evening we should meet out there and
have this.
04:56
It is my favorite Indian street food so yeah.
05:02
If you come to India.
05:07
It is an evening dish and everyone has this
almost every weekend.
05:08
We are wiping sweat.
05:26
So what we have here we again have Khau Galli
and what we have here is a sponge dosa.
05:32
And basically you have a crepe.
05:38
An Indian crepe which is served along with
it is served on a banana leaf.
05:41
If you can notice over here.
05:46
It is a banana leaf.
05:48
So it is effortless cleaning as well after
that.
05:49
And so basically you have a couple of dosas
along with this is a tomato garlic chutney.
05:53
It is a mix of tomato and garlic chutney.
05:59
It will have sour and savory flavor to it.
06:01
And this is it looks like a mint and coconut
chutney.
06:06
It is a mint and coconut chutney.
06:10
And the third one that you see out here is
a potato masal.
06:12
It is just a potato side.
06:18
So next up is Sponge Dosa.
06:23
It is basically like an Indian crepe.
06:24
We have different dipping sauces and yeah
I'm just going to get after it.
06:26
Oh it feels really spongy in the hands.
06:29
So I'm just going to rip off a little piece.
06:33
So I'm going to try this sauce.
06:35
It is a mint coconut chutney.
06:36
Milk coconut chutney.
06:38
Taking it for a swim man.
06:40
They do add in some chillies as well.
06:43
It gives that kick.
06:46
It gives it a kick man.
06:48
The dosa just likes absorbs the sauce so well.
06:50
Oh it is perfect for this.
06:53
That is why they call it the sponge.
06:54
Hence the sponge dosa name.
06:56
Okay and what is this one here?
06:57
So this is the mash.
06:58
It is a potato mash.
06:59
So basically you have potato.
07:03
And some turmeric and seasoning on top.
07:05
Every bite is so different with these different
sauces.
07:14
And the last one for me to try.
07:17
So this is the tomato garlic chutney.
07:19
Tomato garlic chutney.
07:21
Most of the places they just have tomato chutney.
07:22
A tomato onion chutney.
07:24
Here they have the tomato garlic.
07:26
It is all different.
07:32
I was not anticipating that.
07:34
I'm still coughing.
07:35
That is a natural reaction.
07:38
That is exactly it.
07:39
And I'm actually from down South and I've
had a lot of Dosa but never the sponge dosa.
07:40
So let me see how the sponge dosa tastes like.
07:45
Oh wow it is your first time to try.
07:47
The sponge dosa yes.
07:49
And I'm mixing both the chutneys.
07:51
And the mint one together.
07:56
This is my new favorite!
07:59
Oh my gosh that is so cool.
08:02
This is my new favorite.
08:07
I'm going to be here very often.
08:08
Dude that is awesome.
08:10
So we are having the Tawa Pulao in one of
the Khau Gallis out here on JM road (Jangali
08:37
So basically Tawa is a flat grill.
08:41
It is a large grill where they put in onions,
tomatoes, rice.
08:42
It is oily and greasy item to eat.
08:48
And it is topped off with cheese.
08:51
So it almost feels like a chipotle but let's
go and try it.
08:53
Yeah it looks so good.
08:56
And you see it prepared right in front of
you.
08:58
Oh yeah absolutely.
09:01
And it has a spice kick as soon as it goes
on the flat grill you can see that smoke and
09:02
It just starts coming up.
09:08
Can't wait to try it.
09:12
It really smells good.
09:14
Alright we're about to try Tawa Pulao it is
a mixed rice dish.
09:23
They prepared it right in front of us.
09:28
There was like it was like a theatre.
09:30
It was like a theatre performance.
09:31
And we're going to try it together.
09:34
Oh that has so much more flavor than I expected.
09:40
The rice is fluffy.
09:46
It is long grain rice.
09:48
I like the texture of the rice very much.
09:50
It has a crunch of vegetables as well.
09:54
Yeah, I really like how the added peas.
09:55
It has got a bit of spice to it as well.
10:00
We haven't had a lot of mixed rice dishes
so it is really cool to be trying this.
10:04
And one with the it is basically tomato, cucumber
and onions with a yoghurt sauce.
10:09
Oh my gosh that is good.
10:18
This whole street food tour tonight has been
a series of wins.
10:20
Like everything has been pretty awesome.
10:24
And we tried some new things.
10:26
Even you've tried some new things tonight.
10:27
I never knew that my favorite dish would be
from one of the corners in Pune.
10:30
Pune street food guys.
10:35
You've got to try it.
10:36
So we are going to have a cooler.
10:37
It is called buttermilk.
10:41
The Indian buttermilk which is basically a
thinned yoghurt.
10:42
This is also a masala based drink where they
add in a little bit of spices and top it off
10:46
And it is very refreshing.
10:54
That is just what we need after all of that
spicy food.
10:55
The Indian name of it is chaas).
11:04
And basically you know what they call this
at home?
11:07
My parents call this beer.
11:09
We don't have the alcoholic beer so this is
something that cools us down.
11:13
And we have it on a daily basis.
11:16
Yeah it has got a milky sour taste.
11:29
Very uh very unprocessed.
11:30
Um can't say I love it but it is doing its
job.
11:31
It is cooling me down a bit.
11:35
It has a tinge of spice but not a lot.
11:36
It has a lot of freshness from the cilantro.
11:38
It is like an Indian digestive.
11:41
Still don't love it but I'm glad I tried it.
11:48
Alright guys that was an absolutely fantastic
Indian Street Food Tour here in Pune.
