Hello everyone! Welcome to public speaking. 00:03
Today’s first presenter is Ranjit. 00:07
And, I would ask everyone to give him their full attention. 00:10
Chantal, could you dim the lights, please? 00:14
The British imposed a lot of unpopular taxes on the American colonists 00:24
and didn’t let them elect representatives to the British government. 00:29
In retaliation, the Americans started to boycott British goods. 00:34
In 1773, Americans in Massachusetts dumped a shipload of 00:40
British tea into Boston Harbor. 00:45
This became known as the Boston Tea Party. 00:48
As punishment, the British imposed laws known as the Intolerable Acts, 01:01
including the Quartering Act which made Americans let British soldiers live in their homes. 01:06
Some of the American colonies created a Declaration of Rights and Grievances 01:12
which they sent to Britain. 01:17
But, the British just sent soldiers to the colonies to put down any rebellion. 01:18
This led to the first battles of the revolution at Lexington and Concord. 01:24
Thank you Ranjit. 01:32
I know it’s very hard to give a presentation in front of the entire class. 01:33
Now, would anyone like to offer Ranjit constructive feedback about his presentation? 01:38
Any tips for what he might do differently next time? 01:46
For example, were you all able to hear what Ranjit was saying? 01:50
Not really! He needs to speak louder and face the audience. 01:57
Yes, great suggestion. Anyone else? 02:01
He was reading from his paper so it didn’t feel like he was really talking to us, you know? 02:06
Exactly. It’s important, when you’re speaking, 02:11
to look up every sentence or two and make eye contact with someone in the audience. 02:14
Anything else that Ranjit could do to appear more relaxed and feel more confident? 02:20
He could smile more. 02:29
Yes! Smiling makes us feel relaxed. 02:30
Oh, and make sure your phone is off before you speak, next time! 02:34
I do have one more suggestion. 02:41
To connect with listeners, it’s a great idea to use a 02:43
personal story or experience as an example. 02:48
Can you try that next time? 02:52
I think so, yes. Next week, my presentation will be about the causes and effects of stress. 02:54
We look forward to hearing it! 03:01
Ranjit is first up again today, and I look forward to his new presentation. 03:10
Jorge, could you dim the lights please? 03:15
Good morning! Today, I’d like to talk about the causes and effects of stress 03:18
and how to cope with stress. 03:22
Stress has many causes, including work or school, 03:24
life events, changes, or unrealistic expectations of yourself. 03:29
Some effects of stress include headaches, trouble sleeping, 03:35
depression, or lack of concentration. 03:40
I know how hard it can be to deal with stress. 03:44
Last year, I started working after school to save for college. 03:46
But, I didn’t have time to do homework, and my grades went down. 03:50
I had trouble sleeping, 03:54
I only ate junk food, and I stopped hanging out with my friends. 03:56
Fortunately, I was able to talk with a school counselor to manage my stress. 04:01
She suggested that I reduce my hours at my job, eat healthy foods, 04:05
and get some exercise. 04:09
So I literally started walking home from school and bringing my lunch. 04:11
I also asked my teachers for extra help. 04:15
Now, I feel better! 04:17
It’s important to recognize when you are stressed and to ask for help. Thank you. 04:20
Great work, Ranjit! 04:33
I want you all to reflect on how much stronger today’s presentation was. 04:35
Ranjit looked us in the eyes, 04:42
he spoke clearly, he smiled at us, 04:45
and he used a personal anecdote to help us feel more connected to him. 04:49
Well done. 04:56
Thank you, sir. 04:57
