- What's up everybody?
00:00
Today we're talking
about how to make objects
00:01
look like they're floating,
00:03
and no Hogwarts required.
00:05
That's a terrible joke, it
sounded better when I...
00:07
(exciting energetic music)
00:12
Okay, there's a few ways to do this.
00:18
There's a really easy way,
you just take like 200 photos
00:19
until you get the one you like,
00:22
or if you're in a studio,
or a house, your apartment,
00:23
your loft, your flat, your
school, your kitchen, whatever,
00:25
there's a couple things you
can buy to make it easier,
00:29
tape, fishing line,
command hooks, bathtub rod.
00:31
So what do you do with all these objects?
00:35
Essentially we're trying to make an object
00:36
look like it's floating.
00:38
Like I said earlier, you
can literally toss it up
00:39
a bunch of times, and with
a camera that has really
00:41
fast shudder, you can
just snap that photo until
00:43
you're happy with what you get.
00:45
Sometimes that's what I do.
00:47
If I'm outside and I have
no where to hang something,
00:48
I'll just throw it up in the air 200 times
00:50
until I get one that I like, done.
00:53
A bit time consuming.
00:55
Now for those of us who
wanna put a little more time
00:56
into it and control the atmosphere
00:58
and the overall outlook of the photo,
01:00
And then you go into Photoshop
after and you, whoop,
01:03
Photoshop out that fishing line.
01:06
Okay, if you don't have
anywhere to hang something,
01:08
use the bathtub rod, extend it,
01:10
stick it between two walls,
stick it between a door frame,
01:13
stick it between whatever,
something so that you have
01:15
an anchor point to tie and
hang some fishing line.
01:19
If you don't wanna do the bathtub rod,
01:22
you can buy these command hooks.
01:24
Just grab some fishing
line, thread it through
01:26
that command hook, put
that sticky tab on it,
01:27
stick it to the ceiling,
stick it to your doorframe.
01:29
Pull on it, just to make
sure it's tight, good to go.
01:32
Let's just say because
I'm obsessed with coffee,
01:35
we're gonna float, you
guessed it, a coffee mug.
01:36
Tie the fishing line to the mug,
01:39
make sure it's not gonna fall.
01:41
Add a little bit of coffee
to that mug for realism,
01:43
because hey, details matter,
01:46
and we're all about details here.
01:48
And just make sure it
hangs and doesn't fall.
01:50
Stand in front of it, take a photo,
01:52
you can do that with the self timer,
01:54
or you can do it with a remote.
01:56
A remote's nice and easy
because you can wait until
01:58
that object spins to the right angle,
01:59
and then just snap a
photo with your remote,
02:02
Your object is now floating,
boom, no dark arts required!
02:05
Still not funny, is it?
02:09
Okay, we're almost there.
02:11
Can't post the photo yet
because it look stupid
02:13
with that fishing line visible,
02:15
unless that's what you're into and
02:17
you think that's cool, then you know,
02:19
art is subjective, have at it.
02:20
We're gonna get rid of that fishing line.
02:21
I'm gonna show you guys how.
02:24
Okay everybody, you're
gonna pull those images
02:25
into light room, pick the one you like,
02:27
so let's cycle through a few of these.
02:30
Check out our options.
02:33
That's a pretty cool
one, I five star that.
02:37
Hit number five on your keyboard.
02:40
That's a cool one, I dig that one.
02:43
Five star that on my keyboard.
02:45
I think this one looks pretty cool,
02:47
that might be my favorite.
02:49
So you know what, I'll
change these back to four
02:51
because this one's my favorite.
02:54
Ah, that one's pretty cool too, boom.
02:57
I like these too, so we're
gonna work with those.
02:59
So come in here, do your
quick color correction,
03:02
pump the exposure up a little bit,
03:04
let's bring those highlights
down, a little more black,
03:06
higher on the whites, that clarity.
03:10
Look at that clarity.
03:13
So from zero, you slide that up,
03:14
see the contrast that brings
in, that's pretty cool.
03:17
Let's do a little bit of that.
03:19
This is looking pretty good, okay.
03:20
So after you have done your
edits on this that you like,
03:21
you can go to the next
photo in light room,
03:23
and hit previous, and it
will do all the same edits
03:25
So now we've got both
of these that we like.
03:30
Let's highlight both of
those and export them
03:33
into our folder, hit desktop,
make stuff float, boom.
03:35
Okay, so now we gotta hop
into Photoshop and piece
03:44
out that fishing line,
03:47
unless like I said, you
wanna keep that in there.
03:48
But we're gonna get rid of it.
03:51
Super easy, don't freak out.
03:53
I know people are probably like...
03:55
I've never used, like I don't...
03:56
Way easier than you think.
03:58
You're gonna be like, oh my god,
03:59
what else can I get rid of in photos.
04:01
This is a big tip, you're gonna love this.
04:03
Okay, so now we're in Photoshop,
04:06
we're gonna grab our two photos.
04:07
Let's start with...
04:09
Let's start with this
one, that's a good one.
04:11
Drag that into Photoshop
and boop, here we are.
04:13
This is what's cool
about the band aid tool.
04:16
You're gonna come over here,
spot healing brush, band aid.
04:20
For those of you who have never done this,
04:24
I'm about to blow your
mind, check this out.
04:25
Grab the spot healing band aid tool,
04:28
it's this one right here.
04:31
Click on this, hold it down,
drag all the way down to here,
04:33
let go, oh my goodness,
that fishing line is gone.
04:39
So all ready, it's looking pretty cool.
04:44
We just gotta get rid of the
rest of the fishing line.
04:48
So we're gonna do it in stages.
04:50
Sometimes it can get
tricky, like for example,
04:52
see this area right here?
04:56
And I'll get the brush
tool so you guys can see.
04:57
This area right here,
it's a little harder to do
04:59
because we've got the
difference of contrast
05:03
between the wall and my shirt.
05:05
This is a horrible mess.
05:09
But we can still do that.
05:10
We're just gonna make the
brush size a little bigger.
05:13
Make the brush size
right about there, gone.
05:15
Just like that, it's gone.
05:18
It's magic, I don't know
how else to explain it.
05:19
That is pure magic, you
literally click on something,
05:23
It's amazing, it blows my mind.
05:27
I love using Photoshop.
05:30
So we gotta get rid of the rest of this.
05:32
One thing to point out,
don't get ahead of yourself.
05:34
You don't wanna get rid of the
whole fishing line at once,
05:35
because if you do that, look at this.
05:37
What just happened?
05:44
A little bit too much to process there.
05:45
We gotta go bit by bit.
05:47
Now when we get to the wall,
we're gonna bring that brush
05:49
size down a little bit,
05:51
and we're gonna go little by little.
05:52
We don't need to go overkill and do a ton.
05:54
Just a little bit at a time.
05:56
Don't do the whole thing at once,
05:58
it's not gonna look as
good as you think it will.
05:59
Don't get excited, I know it's easy.
06:01
Okay, so we got that out of the way.
06:04
Come up here, a little bit at a time.
06:06
Baby steps people, baby steps.
06:09
Oh, look at this, look at that.
06:14
We are painting away the past
to make way for the future.
06:16
I don't know what that means.
06:21
Just get in here with the shadow.
06:24
Whoop, okay, that fishing
line, ladies and gentlemen,
06:26
is just about completely gone.
06:30
We get that little knot on the
end of the cup to get rid of.
06:32
Not to worry, a little bit
at a time, paint that away.
06:36
It's so easy when black is the
background too, by the way.
06:40
Let's just get rid of that to here.
06:45
Boom, boom, we're just clicking.
06:47
We're doing baby steps, folks.
06:50
Just a little bit, a
little bit, a little bit.
06:52
(soft peaceful music)
06:55
Look at that, that's the most
insane thing I've ever seen.
07:01
Now you have a floating cup
and no explanation for it.
07:07
Now I'll add some more creative edits,
07:11
we're gonna get into
this in another tutorial,
07:13
but we'll dress up the
photo a little more.
07:14
Fast forward here so you can see it.
07:17
Okay, remember that lens
distortion app I told you guys
07:19
to download in order to
take better iPhone photos?
07:21
You can use the same
thing on your desktop.
07:24
You go through, you find
the lens distortions,
07:25
you pick a light hit, anything you want.
07:28
I like this light hit 30,
you drag it into Photoshop.
07:31
You zoom out, you make it
the size that you want.
07:34
You hit Enter, you come down,
you hit that Play button,
07:37
and boom, beautiful light hit.
07:41
The windows on the left side here.
07:44
So we're gonna have that
coming in from the left,
07:45
because it doesn't make sense if it's
07:48
coming in from the right.
07:49
So we're coming in from the left here,
07:50
nice little light flare, it looks dope.
07:52
Let's bring that in a little bit more.
07:55
Perfect, pump that
saturation a little bit more,
07:57
Ooh wee, that's looking moody.
08:02
F to preview, F to preview again.
08:04
Command plus to make that
full screen and look at that.
08:07
That's pretty cool.
08:11
And all we used was some
fishing line, a command hook,
08:12
and a couple quick edits in Photoshop.
08:16
You post that online and
people are gonna be like,
08:18
You can throw it up a bunch of times,
08:20
but if you've got coffee in
a mug and you're throwing
08:23
that in the air to get a photo,
08:25
you know what, tag me in
that, I'd love to see it.
08:27
We got the before, with
that big line there.
08:31
And then we've got the after.
08:36
I can do that all day.
08:48
Not too bad, you guys just
learned a new skill today.
08:51
I wanna see stuff floating, tag me!
08:53
So there you have it,
08:56
you can now float objects in your photos.
08:57
Get creative with this,
maybe you're doing engagement
08:59
shoots for a couple, you
can float both the rings
09:01
with both of their hands,
that's a good idea.
09:03
Coffee connoisseur?
09:06
Float a coffee mug, float a deck of cards,
09:08
that seems to be a recurring theme.
09:10
Float anything you want.
09:12
You can actually go to
Walmart and buy command hooks
09:13
that can hold up to 20 pounds.
09:15
So maybe a cool idea is
taking a portrait of somebody
09:17
and having them float that
very portrait in a frame,
09:20
in the photo, that's cool.
09:23
All right, that's it for me today.
09:25
If you like this video,
hit that Like button,
09:26
share it, whatever you want, comment.
09:28
What are you gonna float?
09:31
See you guys in the next tutorial, peace!
09:32
You guys ever notice I do this a lot?
09:35
I talk with my hands a lot.
09:37
I feel like it would be so weird
if I just stood there like,
09:38
we're gonna talk about
floating objects today.
09:43
You can float a coffee mug.
09:45
(soft exciting music)
09:48
