oh my goodness 200 300 400 400 billions 00:00
of people travel through airports every 00:05
year 00:07
675 with all those people comes a whole 00:11
lot of stuff so $8 number is 11 some of 00:14
that stuff ends up at this auction we do 00:18
it every fall and cleans up all the 00:20
items that people have abandon in the 00:22
airport lost in the airport automobiles 00:24
why not go for the shoe especially the 00:27
Red Box shoes 12 on that car 12 this 00:29
year we have a Mini Cooper which is one 00:32
of the nicer cars that we've seen the 00:34
Cadillac Escalade of the hor Steelers 00:36
player that one brought in a lot of 00:38
money two two but we're at the end of 00:41
the road all of this you got a nice buy 00:44
there 00:48
sir starts 00:51
here from Lost at the airport we 00:58
received a box of human remains to found 01:02
in Alabama a 40 karat Colombian in World 01:05
sometimes it's a good adventure and 01:08
sometimes not and sold at auction sold 01:10
at 7,000 this is the story of luggage 01:12
gone 01:16
[Music] 01:18
lost welcome to Seattle Tacoma 01:23
International Airport we want your 01:25
journey to be a safe one for all members 01:26
of your family wonder what happens to 01:28
your luggage after you check it 01:30
in we did today we're going to be 01:33
sending this GoPro down the Journey of 01:36
the bag and we're going to put this 01:39
protective case on here cuz we have no 01:40
idea exactly what this camera will be 01:42
encountering there we 01:44
go go ahead hello hi Sacramento the 01:50
final today great you are all set to go 01:54
awesome thank you than you 01:57
after your bag gets put on the initial 02:01
conveyor belt it goes through a series 02:03
of 02:05
conveyors sometimes several miles long 02:06
that will take the bag through an 02:09
automated security 02:11
screening if the x-ray technology 02:12
detects a Potential Threat in a bag it 02:15
sends the x-ray images to a TSA officer 02:17
who tries to resolve the threat if it's 02:20
still questionable TSA manually inspects 02:22
the bag less than 5% of bags are 02:24
physically inspected 02:28
when the bags leave security the 02:31
sortation systems will move the bags 02:33
over which then will go down a slide 02:35
down to the respective pier where an 02:38
agent will load the bag onto a 02:40
cart but these are more than just 02:44
bags they hold the clues to who we are 02:48
as 02:50
Travelers what we have in common and 02:51
What Makes Us 02:54
unique once the bags arrive out at the 02:57
aircraft they are uploaded onto the 03:00
aircraft and they're off to their 03:03
[Music] 03:06
destination or 03:10
not thanks for calling Seattle Airport 03:12
lost and found my name is Michelle how 03:15
can I help you oh my gosh oh 03:16
my oh interesting oh it's full of 03:21
stuff every day lost luggage Stacks up 03:26
an airports around the world I can't 03:29
judge a book by its cover and every item 03:31
has a different story hi how can I help 03:33
you I yeah I left something at T 03:35
yesterday what we do here is lots of 03:38
detective work Lots behind the scenes 03:40
there are people working around the 03:44
clock to reunite all the lost things 03:45
with their owners I'm looking for 03:48
Clues oh look at that this is what I 03:50
love about uh lost and found because you 03:53
can be your own 03:55
detective yeah they came from Hawaii I'm 03:57
always surprised by the type of items 04:00
that people leave 04:03
[Music] 04:05
behind got document 04:09
9816 we received a Costco envelope from 04:13
[Music] 04:17
TSA it looks like maybe like personal 04:18
postcards inside the envelope is 04:22
seasonal greeting cards that's a 04:24
Christmas card in a New Year the Seattle 04:26
International airport processes about 04:29
100 lost items every 04:31
day and this is from December 28th 04:34
1976 and during the holidays that 04:37
doubles this is 04:40
12459 these envelopes are seasonal 04:42
grading cards um seem to be very um 04:45
sentimental 200 every different item has 04:47
a different sense of emotion to it maybe 04:50
we could call Costco and give them that 04:52
order number and they'll be able to pull 04:53
it 04:55
up with about 430 commercial airports in 04:56
the US we're talking millions of lost 05:00
items each 05:02
year and that's not even including the 05:06
airlines play with Alaska Airlines a 05:09
proud member of the One World l in 2021 05:11
which was a year without that much 05:14
travel we handled 43,000 left on board 05:16
[Music] 05:20
items I would say I would have at least 05:23
once a day somebody coming towards me 05:25
and say I think I left it on board 05:27
one time I was working a flight and 05:31
another passenger comes over and says 05:33
hey I was on this plane it landed I 05:35
think I I left something of value in 05:38
there I said okay well what is it and he 05:40
says it's my 05:44
dentures so I went on board and it was 05:45
there on the floor and it was just the 05:48
dentur just right there so I grabbed a 05:51
couple of napkins to pick it up and he 05:54
also seemed very relieved to find them 05:57
they'll guesty planes and typically the 06:00
items are found by our 06:03
cleaners they will log the seat that 06:04
they found it in hopefully they'll have 06:08
the flight number that had just come in 06:10
they'll give that item either to the 06:12
customer service agent that met the 06:14
flight or if it's a late at night flight 06:16
they would bring it down to the baggage 06:19
service office if nobody claims those 06:20
items then they get sent here to Central 06:23
baggage services and then we try to make 06:26
a match the way I describe it is where 06:28
the lost and found for the whole Airline 06:31
anytime something's left on the plane 06:33
whether it's a pencil a wallet an iPad 06:34
everything gets sent here within 24 06:37
hours so we have a CPAP 06:39
machine at this stage we're kind of just 06:42
processing it sorting it from high value 06:44
low value then the next agent will 06:46
actually be able to do a little bit more 06:48
research we will start with high value 06:50
items um we do prioritize these items 06:52
I'll go ahead and start with this laptop 06:55
and loging in as found report the first 06:58
step that's taken is there any obvious 07:01
signs that we can reunite this item in 07:03
here we found a boarding pass we logg 07:06
that into a technology system that will 07:09
help us identify key words in a report 07:11
that the guest has hopefully made I do 07:15
have a loss report for the same flight 07:17
oh I have two so I will open each of 07:20
these up and see if I can get a matching 07:23
name which I did at that point we would 07:27
reach out to the guest I was calling to 07:30
let you know that I was able to match 07:32
your loss Report with an item that we 07:34
found in our warehouse awesome all 07:36
righty well thank you ma'am you are so 07:37
excited everyone was like I don't know 07:40
with no tag on it it's a 5050 chance and 07:42
I was like I just got that thing oh 07:45
right I did find your boarding pass so 07:47
that helped a lot thank you so much 07:49
ma'am okay thank you so much for 07:50
choosing Alaska you have a great 07:52
day I lost my bag we are always busy 07:55
here in in the lost and found office but 07:59
we get even busier during the 08:00
holidays this past holiday season we had 08:06
a suitcase of meat come into our office 08:09
the suitcase was filled from bottom to 08:12
top with nothing but deer meat goat meat 08:13
sausage many different items one 08:16
interesting item that we saw was uh a 08:18
guy who lost a box of rocks the guy came 08:22
through and he asked have you guys seen 08:26
any rubies no we haven't seen any rubies 08:28
he said well you probably wouldn't know 08:31
if they were rubies because they're raw 08:34
they look like rocks it was a box about 08:36
like this and when we brought him out he 08:39
goes yeah that's it that's 08:41
it we've all been there before I think 08:45
it's a a common thing we can all relate 08:47
to everybody's done it before I've done 08:50
it myself oh yeah um head headrest I've 08:52
lost several headrest too embarrass to 08:55
see how many a very nice lady said ma'am 08:58
is this yours I was so embarrassed said 09:00
yes it's mine thank you it was a gift 09:03
and then I had to run back and say it's 09:05
me I left my bag on board and they said 09:09
don't you work for an airline I said yes 09:11
to this day I still miss that ground 09:13
sweater Mark Jackson please return the 09:15
checkpoint for a left behind item lost 09:19
and found handles anything left behind 09:21
in security checkpoints in any general 09:23
airport 09:26
areas 09:28
all right let's go heading to checkpoint 09:32
GRE to start the day we're lost in 09:35
problem 70% of Seattle's lost items 09:38
comes from the TSA checkpoint all right 09:41
gentlemen excuse us 09:44
please first thing in the morning we 09:47
check our lost and found database and we 09:49
compile list from all five screening 09:51
checkpoints we got 09:53
9324 we go out to each individual 09:55
checkpoint and collect all their lost 09:58
and 10:00
found and last item 10:03
9015 excuse me gentlemen pre pandemic we 10:05
collected roughly 30,000 items on a 10:09
yearly basis so that one I need High 10:12
Travel seasons do produce a lot more 10:15
loss and found your summertime your 10:16
Spring Breaks especially holiday season 10:18
through three gotta no TSA meant a lot 10:20
less lost 10:23
items before TSA was established in 2001 10:25
passengers merely had to walk through a 10:29
metal 10:31
detector no removing belts or 10:32
shoes and as for back checks what back 10:35
checks with fewer items removed fewer 10:39
items were left 10:42
behind all right how you doing we're 10:46
going to meet you out at the back door 10:48
when the office opens up here at 8:00 in 10:50
the morning all right we come downstairs 10:51
with the bin or bins and we start 10:53
turning them over to the Port of Seattle 10:56
good morning hi good morning Michelle 10:58
how are you guys I'm good how you doing 11:00
you got got a lot of stuff for me today 11:02
that's right it's 3day work right come 11:04
on in the most common items that I've 11:06
seen left behind in the security 11:09
checkpoints are usually laptops gaming 11:10
consoles iPads 7478 I guess we're moving 11:13
to the laptop MH okay one of the most 11:17
unusual items that I've picked up 11:20
through the lost and found was actually 11:21
today it was a tortilla press 11:23
7582 cuz you never know when you want a 11:26
quadal right 11:28
yeah we have to check each one of the 11:29
item especially with the 11:31
clothing and 11:36
6847 okay so let's check the pockets 11:38
sorry there's something 11:41
there in a typical travel year nearly $1 11:43
million is Left Behind at TSA 11:47
checkpoints in cash JFK Airport takes 11:49
the cake with over 11:53
$98,000 with the bags as well we have to 11:57
go through it oh a lot of 11:59
books a if we get like a perishable 12:02
items inside those bags we have to take 12:06
them out it can only stay there for 24 12:08
hours you can imagine a bag with a 12:10
banana that sits there for a month it's 12:13
not going to be pretty a you know 12:15
sometimes you can't help but to feel 12:18
sorry for the mama who's traveling with 12:20
this 12:22
[Music] 12:22
baby going through all these items is a 12:24
process 12:27
okay all right we see you later see you 12:36
later guys and sometimes that process 12:39
bears oh my gosh unusual fruit there's 12:43
actually fish 12:48
[Music] 12:51
inside all right so this bag actually 12:57
came from TSA but there's no name on it 12:59
so let's see if we can find the name 13:02
okay lots of goodies 13:05
treats oh my 13:09
gosh there's actually fish 13:12
inside like real fish why 13:15
would this is why we have to 13:19
check 13:22
it's smelly smelly 13:23
fish and I don't know why they put that 13:27
in 13:31
so sorry we'll have to dump this right 13:32
away these items need to go out from the 13:38
bag and we have to dispose it 13:41
unfortunately because it's really 13:43
perishable items I'm interested to find 13:45
out what's inside this 13:47
[Music] 13:49
bag looks like rice that is um from the 13:51
bottom of the pot I don't know this 13:55
might be like 13:57
spices oh what's in I think this is 14:00
garlic 14:03
CH okay sorry they will all go 14:06
here aha 14:11
medication there is a medication here 14:14
which gives me a clue who it belongs to 14:17
yep there's a name so we can search for 14:20
the owner I'm assuming they were 14:25
supposed to to do sushi with that fish 14:28
but sorry have to go in 14:31
there and that's about it for this 14:34
bag when we receive lost and found bags 14:38
everything has to be registered from 14:41
inside 14:43
out hopefully the name on this 14:45
medication will lead us to the owner of 14:47
the 14:49
[Applause] 14:50
bag raw fish is just one of the many 14:51
strange lost items the Dublin 14:55
International Airport has seen a left 14:57
behind toilet life-sized mannequin and 14:59
headstone Pittsburgh International 15:03
Airport has its own laundry list of 15:06
unusual items when items are left 15:07
throughout the common areas of the 15:10
terminal they are then turned into to us 15:12
at the information 15:14
desk we store those items for 30 days 15:16
and try to make every attempt to reach 15:19
the owner some of the the strange items 15:21
that we have seen over the years a pair 15:24
of souvenir alligator heads a rice maker 15:26
a carpet steamer diving equipment false 15:29
teeth a 2500 page Vietnamese to English 15:33
dictionary that was very thick about 15:36
this thick all those bracelet if they 15:39
are then unclaimed we send them offsite 15:41
in preparation for the 15:44
[Music] 15:48
auction hey Tony oh hey detective Le 15:52
before the Seattle Airport even thinks 15:56
about an auction they let an actual 15:58
detective take a stab at finding owners 16:00
you got any good stuff for me this month 16:02
Yes actually I do uh our policy is to 16:05
hold on to items for 30 days three 16:08
tablets here okay um what we would call 16:11
high value items say a laptop or tablet 16:14
or cell phone um jewelry we will turn 16:17
those over to the 16:21
police many years ago with lost and 16:23
found because I have some experience 16:25
with computer forensics I felt that my 16:28
skills would help get some property back 16:31
to folks see next month see you next 16:35
month I just try to do an additional 16:37
check to try to get them get the 16:39
property back to the 16:42
[Music] 16:45
owners one of the easiest things is 16:47
checking them for stolen 16:49
status the lost and found just doesn't 16:51
have the ability to to do that so we 16:53
checked to see if these items have been 16:56
reported stolen 16:57
and see if there's a Sim in there it 16:59
looks like it might be a foreign Sim 17:01
over the years because of people's 17:04
concerns over security and and 17:05
everything it makes it a lot harder 17:08
sometimes to actually get property back 17:10
to folks and unfortunately I'm not able 17:13
to read it it's one of those Sims that I 17:16
just I'm not able to read so with this 17:18
particular phone I'm pretty much at a at 17:20
a dead end serial number is not reported 17:22
stolen um I'm not able to get any phone 17:26
number off the um off the sim card all 17:29
right 17:33
so it is kind of frustrating that you 17:35
know we'll have a a $2,000 laptop 17:38
sitting there here and it's not reported 17:40
stolen we don't have a name and we start 17:44
running out of options so this is one 17:46
that came in last month that I still 17:49
haven't uh had a chance to get to yet 17:51
and we've got a lot of different pieces 17:54
here here and between these we should be 17:58
able to 18:01
hopefully get a name that we can get a 18:03
phone number 18:07
[Music] 18:08
on sometimes losing your luggage is out 18:10
of your 18:13
control it looks like a lot of uh gmen 18:14
must have guys have a weight and balance 18:17
issue so they didn't send a lot of that 18:19
when you're out at the airport and your 18:22
bag doesn't come off the bagage claim we 18:23
know that that feeling is really hard 18:26
I'm going to call the gate to see if 18:28
they when a bag is not able to be 18:30
identified to a guest the airports will 18:34
continue to try and find the guest for 18:36
the first 5 days on the sixth day the 18:38
bag is then tagged to be sent here to 18:41
Central 18:43
baggage where we will begin a more 18:44
intensive search there's a a a tag with 18:46
a name there is some sense of ownership 18:50
on our part that we didn't necessarily 18:53
care for that item like we should have 18:55
I'm sorry that your baggage didn't get 18:57
to go with you we have it here and we 18:59
certainly want to get it back to you 19:02
it's in our nature to want to rectify 19:04
that situation this is a left on board 19:07
item as of right now we have yet to find 19:09
that owner a photo album that was given 19:12
from we believe a wife to a husband we 19:14
nicknamed The Gentleman on the front the 19:16
pointing guy because throughout the 19:19
whole entire book all he is doing is 19:20
pointing Every Witch Way at every item a 19:23
left behind item is a little bit 19:25
different than a checked item because we 19:26
don't necessarily know who that item 19:28
belonged to so we created a found report 19:30
hoping that the guest had submitted a 19:32
lost report as of right now there was no 19:35
trace results which means that nothing 19:37
in our system matched the two of them we 19:39
actually pulled out every single photo 19:42
hoping that there was something written 19:44
on the back of one of them no luck there 19:45
in one of the photos towards the 19:48
back there is a boat which is registered 19:51
within the state of 19:55
Washington and so I ended up up calling 19:56
the state of Washington to see if I 19:59
could get any vessel information but 20:01
doesn't this look like him what's next 20:03
for us is we're hoping to actually use 20:05
the power of social media in our favor 20:07
that looks like Lake Chalan and so we 20:10
just hope that everyone can help us try 20:12
and figure out who the pointing guy 20:14
is checked baggage on the other hand has 20:17
a better chance of making it home the 20:20
amount of times that we're unable to 20:23
reunite a check bag with a guest is very 20:24
small we're talking a fraction of a 20:26
percent across all Airlines the chance 20:29
of never getting your bag back is less 20:32
than half a 20:34
percent but with billions of people 20:36
traveling every year that half a percent 20:38
adds up we're talking over a million 20:41
bags 20:44
worldwide many of them end up 20:45
[Music] 20:50
here my name is uh DNE gri 20:54
my job here at unclean baggage as 20:58
Transportation specialist I go all over 21:00
the country Coast to Coast picking up 21:02
lost luggage from 21:05
Airlines I'm picking up luggage on a 21:07
weekly basis a lot of miles a lot of 21:09
hours uh I listen to a lot of podcast U 21:12
I listen to a lot of top radio probably 21:15
too much 21:17
sometimes sometimes just 21:19
music sometimes I'm Amazed by the number 21:22
of bags that we 21:24
get 21:27
every day I open 21:29
dozens it depends on the size it depends 21:31
on what's in the bag I usually open 21:34
dozen Poncho kitchen wear M lots of 21:38
cologne lots of 21:42
[Music] 21:44
shoes we're at inclan baggage and we're 21:45
a retail store in Scottsboro Alabama and 21:48
we work and partner directly with the 21:50
major airlines and we sell unclaimed 21:52
baggage 21:57
it's a nice shirt have some nice clean 21:59
socks clean these shoes look pretty good 22:02
that all I got started with my 22:05
dad who was a ham radio operator back in 22:07
the 22:11
1960s one day a gentleman got on the 22:13
radio and said I heard this big problem 22:16
with unclaimed bags we have so many of 22:18
them we don't know what to do with them 22:20
my dad uh he said I think I see an 22:22
opportunity there I may be able to help 22:26
you my dad borrowed $300 from one of my 22:27
grandfathers he borrowed my other 22:30
grandfather's 1965 Chevy C10 pickup 22:32
truck and he headed up towards 22:36
Washington DC and bought his first load 22:39
of unan bags from Trailway bus 22:42
lines and and then we segwayed into the 22:49
airline world air travel in the 70s 22:53
looked a little different than it does 22:56
today the new 747 jet boasted spiral 22:59
staircases and smoking was permitted the 23:02
alcohol was flowing and meals were 23:06
carved to 23:08
order sitting in coats was like going to 23:09
the movies in the early' 70s it would 23:12
have started with Eastern Airlines and 23:16
they lost a ton of bags that was our 23:19
first Airline and now we work with 23:21
pretty much all of them throughout the 23:24
industry in 50 years of going through 23:25
other people's stuff they've come across 23:28
some surprising 23:31
items one of the most noteworthy to me 23:33
is the 40 karat Colombian 23:36
emerald it was in the toe of a sock 23:39
rolled up in the corner of a 23:42
suitcase I don't think I'll ever forget 23:44
[Music] 23:46
it today Dwayne is the guy delivering 23:49
all this unclaimed baggage to Scottsboro 23:52
and that's where this process begins 23:55
Miss debah here's your next bag thank 23:59
you as they're opening the bag going 24:04
through their archaeological dig they're 24:07
deciding if we're going to sell it if we 24:09
need to recycle it or if we need to 24:12
donate it and this is a nice surprise 24:14
ceramic heater we open bags soort 24:17
everything out send them to the 24:20
Departments that where they 24:21
belong that's nice The Beetles yeah a 24:23
third of everything we get is recycled 24:26
nice pants check the 24:29
pockets more underwear everything looks 24:32
pretty fresh that's nice so obviously 24:35
people travel with undergarments we 24:37
never sell any used undergarments we're 24:40
going to recycle those with fabric waste 24:43
you will be amazed at how many people 24:45
travel with brand new and packaged 24:47
underwear we'll price those and put them 24:49
on our cell FL to sell it does feel like 24:51
I'm stepping into somebody else's life 24:54
like this might be a ukulele 24:56
and I 24:58
like seeing where people have 24:59
been make sure make sure it's in tune or 25:02
Out Of 25:06
Tune the bags usually tell a story and 25:10
you never know what you're going to find 25:14
and it's kind of an adventure kind of at 25:16
times sometimes it's a good adventure 25:19
and sometimes not so one of the most 25:21
hair raising things we found at 25:25
unclaimed baggage was a live rattlesnake 25:27
one of our openers as she was opening a 25:30
duffel 25:32
bag a live rattlesnake came slithering 25:33
out of it I think that they released it 25:36
out behind the building yeah to let him 25:39
live on live another 25:42
day in Pittsburgh some of the most 25:46
surprising unclaimed items are cars the 25:49
abandoned vehicles are always the most 25:52
popular items we're usually left with 25:53
between 10 and 20 cars a year 25:55
we contact the owners the police contact 25:58
the owners Department of Transportation 26:01
contacts the owners and if there's still 26:02
no response from those folks then it 26:04
comes to us for the auction $2500 on 26:06
Nissan 1,000 bid 122 1,000 get 122 get 26:09
12 $1,100 on the KNE side now 12 I think 26:13
some of the cars can be left behind if 26:17
people are on maybe extended vacations 26:19
1,000 2,000 3 4 4 4 5 5 6 26:22
if the car doesn't have a lot of value 26:28
they may not want to pay some of the 26:30
parking fees or the towing storage fees 26:32
that the airport would charge and they 26:34
just simply abandon the 26:37
car1 sold it 7,000 there are some left 26:39
behind items that hold more of a 26:43
sentimental value so got this bag a 26:45
couple of weeks 26:49
ago I'm going to do a secondary research 26:50
on 26:53
it got this Brown case here let's see 26:54
what's in this 26:58
case oh 27:01
[Music] 27:04
interesting got this Brown case here 27:12
what we're looking at now is a Ace 27:15
Hardware bag with a brown box 27:17
photos Metals military Metals Inside the 27:20
Box what we have are military Metals a 27:24
name tag and a lot of pictures we got a 27:28
naval Reserve organization Association 27:31
card and a selective Services card since 27:34
those are all in one person's name I'm 27:39
going to try and look him up so I've got 27:42
one person in Kansas they're 27:45
51 so that would not be them because of 27:51
the selector Services card it's going 27:54
back to to 27:57
55 and then I have another person but 27:58
they're 28:01
deceased we also have a photograph of a 28:03
baby which has a date of 28:07
1987 and it also has her name on there 28:10
let's try the young lady that was 28:14
actually on this picture we have her 28:16
listed here as 28:18
well I've been able to find several 28:21
people that appear to be associated with 28:23
this person I've placed several phone 28:26
calls yes hi Maryann my name is Tony so 28:28
hopefully one of these people know who 28:32
this is and we'll call 28:35
back looks like shirts back in Alabama a 28:40
third of all the luggage unclaimed 28:44
baggage receives is sold and it looks 28:46
clean but we'll launder 28:49
it we're very proud of our laundry 28:54
facility uh we are actually the largest 28:56
in the state of Alabama we process more 28:59
in one month than most of them do in an 29:02
entire 29:04
year it's just surprising what people 29:05
Tak in their luggage dishes uh 29:07
silverware water bottles is it's there 29:11
is a lot of 29:14
those I guess the one that stands up 29:15
most I washed car mats why somebody took 29:17
that on their vacation I don't 29:20
know Electronics get the full workup 29:22
too most we get in is usually headphones 29:26
stuff like that so it's really just 29:29
getting all germs everything cleaned off 29:30
after we clean them we test them to make 29:34
sure they're functioning and from there 29:37
they're going to data wipe 29:39
everything our pricers will then price 29:42
the merchandise whether it's apparel 29:45
shoes Jewelry accessories 29:47
Electronics the jewelry counter is where 29:52
you'll find some big ticket items this 29:54
this diamond engagement ring appraised 29:57
for a little over $10,000 and we have it 29:59
listed for a little over 30:01
$5,000 this is a emerald inam tennis 30:03
bracelet we have it listed at a little 30:06
over 30:09
$14,000 but there are some things you 30:10
can't put a price tag on in the 9s a 30:12
shipping container showed up with a 30:15
guidance system for fighter jets and 30:17
it's a the department of the US Navy 30:19
handle with Extreme Caution I am worth 30:22
my weight in 30:24
gold the actual gold is authenticated 30:25
appraised priced and put on the 30:29
floor these look like they are diamonds 30:34
but then I can also use my diamond 30:38
tester and it does test 30:40
Diamond this ruby ring is currently the 30:45
most expensive item in the 30:48
[Music] 30:50
store the most expensive item we've ever 30:52
sold in our store was a men's Platinum 30:54
prolex it's just a pretty cool 31:00
experience to come be a part of and see 31:02
what all people 31:05
lose okay Lot number one we have a whole 31:07
lot of ear ranks some of the lost 31:09
jewelry in Pittsburgh has people 31:11
scratching their heads we are always 31:13
surprised with how many wedding rings 31:16
are turned in to the lost and found 31:18
mainly men's wedding rings we're not 31:20
sure why a lot of them are claimed but 31:22
there are still a good amount that are 31:25
turned over to us at the auction we also 31:27
this year have a pair of stiletto heels 31:30
that are brand new um so I think that 31:33
will maybe draw in the 31:35
ladies I think that people are 31:39
interested in just seeing what items are 31:41
left 31:42
behind hi uh I lost the case of 31:45
harmonicas is there any chance that you 31:48
guys have it okay let me go see if I can 31:50
find it I grabbed it off the plane and 31:52
then I was coming here and I went 31:55
outside to wait for my ride and I just 31:57
like set it against the 31:59
wall I thought for sure that it was 32:01
gone 32:04
yeah thankfully some kind soul decided 32:06
to uh turn it in they were pretty 32:10
intrigued by what was 32:12
inside thank you so much 32:13
[Music] 32:18
apprciate yeah so 32:25
work if you lose an item at one of 32:29
paris's airports it will eventually end 32:32
up at the world's very first lost and 32:34
found office established by Napoleon in 32:36
1804 the Bureau of found objects has 32:40
received a human skull a Taxidermy 32:43
Lobster and a saber from 32:46
1892 this is one that came in last month 32:49
that I still but in Seattle some of the 32:53
Lost items end up with this guy 32:55
um the logo on here doesn't appear to go 32:57
with any sort of 33:00
school I'm looking for something that 33:03
may talk about like a particular school 33:05
then I can know a particular City where 33:08
that person lives when we go to get a 33:10
name a lot of times it helps if we have 33:13
middle initials information like that um 33:16
or a city will help as well what we 33:20
have 33:25
kidss Kindle Fire on that Kindle Fire 33:28
tablet the parent had set up two 33:32
profiles for the kids he just used 33:33
initials for the children we got a name 33:36
and a midle 33:39
initial did you lose something file a 33:40
lost item we might get lucky with this 33:43
name I have uh different databases that 33:47
I can use and if it's a unique enough 33:50
name I can try to track down the owner 33:53
that way we only got one let's give it a 33:56
call sometimes the time zone can help me 33:58
kind of pinpoint the region and increase 34:01
the chances that I'm actually getting 34:03
the correct person hi this is detective 34:04
donin with the pter Seattle Police 34:07
Department sometimes there's enough 34:09
breadcrumbs of items in a in a 34:11
particular bag that allows me to kind of 34:13
track them down yep yep Curious George 34:15
is here he's sitting on my desk yeah so 34:18
we got the uh the Kindle the um backpack 34:20
the colorful backpack the uh um Curious 34:24
George and we'll get him 34:27
home Curious George is lucky he'll make 34:29
it home but at unclaimed baggage 34:32
millions of items end up in other 34:35
people's homes some of those items 34:37
aren't what you'd expect it's amazing 34:40
what people travel with about 20 years 34:43
ago they had this automatic in and I I 34:45
mean oh uh I said is that for sale and 34:47
they said yes and I said I want it this 34:50
is uh a charm bracelet that I have been 34:52
uh collecting charm for several years 34:55
one of the most interesting things that 34:58
we've gotten consistently over the years 35:00
have been wedding gowns I can remember 35:02
at least two full suits of armor we've 35:04
had a number of kilts a number of bag 35:06
pipes we we actually had a a camera show 35:08
up that was was a camera for the space 35:11
shuttle had been on space shuttle 35:14
missions and and we got that back into 35:15
the hands of 35:17
NASA for the Seattle Airport lost and 35:19
found getting items back into the right 35:21
hands is the goal okay so we'll get the 35:24
label that's the possible owner because 35:27
it matches the medication we'll give 35:29
them a call Mrs K oh it's your mom oh 35:31
gotcha you know we found um vegetables 35:35
and fish in there I did find a a match 35:37
for the bag with the raw fish it looks 35:40
like they did file a loss report and 35:42
unfortunately yeah can't stay in the bag 35:44
so we have to throw them away okay the 35:46
bag is confirmed with the owner and they 35:49
will pick it up tomorrow all right we'll 35:51
see you tomorrow Mr 35:53
Kim at the end of the day there are 35:55
ultimately items that go 35:59
unclaimed many of them are donated to 36:01
various 36:03
organizations but some go to the dogs 36:04
our bomb can9 unit uses some of the 36:07
suitcases and clothing items and even 36:10
some of the the cosmetics and toiletry 36:13
items in these unclaimed bags because 36:16
they're able to then incorporate that 36:19
into their training for their bomb 36:20
dogs good morning again l ladies and 36:24
gentlemen we'd like to welcome you all 36:27
to the auction we're glad if the 36:28
electronics are still in good shape we 36:29
can send them off to auction and lost 36:31
and found from the airport accumulation 36:33
for the oneyear period we're here at 36:36
Pittsburgh International Airport's 36:37
annual auction we're getting ready to 36:39
auction off all of the loss and found 36:41
and items that were abandoned throughout 36:42
the last year here at the airport come 36:44
on now let's have a sale sale 36:46
time it's always interesting to see what 36:49
items get left here I'm looking for uh 36:53
Hardware either myself or for resale 36:57
when I saw these lots of laptops I'm 36:59
hoping to donate them to my Civil Air 37:02
Patrol unit Electronics they their ear 37:04
pods I would be on that truck but she'll 37:06
kill me if I drive it home so I I can't 37:09
do 37:12
that that Mini Cooper seems like a nice 37:12
car I'm going to bid on it and see what 37:15
happens the auction company will accept 37:17
the money order Cashers check certified 37:19
check this year there's a Mini Cooper 37:22
and pickup truck so personally I'm 37:24
interested to see you know what are the 37:25
cars going for those are always the big 37:27
ticket items here one of the cars we did 37:28
have was a former Pittsburgh Steelers 37:30
player he had since moved on to Chicago 37:32
his car was parked here in the lot and 37:34
he just never responded and didn't come 37:37
back and get his car so It ultimately 37:38
went to auction it was a Cadillac 37:40
Escalade at London's heow airport the 37:42
unclaimed baggage gets auctioned off 37:45
twice a month the difference here is 37:46
there's no peeking in the bags before 37:49
you bid going once anybody bit 15,000 37:51
going twice anybody bit 15,000 000 sold 37:54
it 37:58
$4,750 out of all the Left Behind items 38:00
the Mini Cooper brought in the most cash 38:03
but every single item was sold this is 38:05
like totally crazy like I had not 38:08
expected like any kind of this kind of 38:10
stuff but being a big fan of the NFL and 38:12
the Steelers I got a couple of our game 38:14
waren 38:17
jerseys nice and dirty meaning their 38:18
game 38:21
one I won six lots of jewelry how much 38:22
did I spend uh 2600 275 for pones that's 38:25
not bad $8,000 which was actually our 38:30
our limit why not go for the shoes 38:33
especially the red bottom shoes I think 38:36
it's still setting in that I actually 38:38
won them most years at the airport 38:39
Authority auction raises more than 38:42
$150,000 the money that's raised goes to 38:44
the airport Authority Foundation which 38:46
supports military scholarships those 38:47
types of things yeah this is our first 38:49
time probably won't be the last though 38:50
oh yeah come back next year for sure go 38:52
home and play with our new toys 38:54
an auction is one way to get rid of 39:00
uncleaned baggage but at the unclaim 39:02
baggage center there's so much lost 39:04
stuff it's impossible to sell it 39:07
[Music] 39:09
all at unclaimed baggage you might think 39:11
you'd find a lot of well baggage but 39:14
that's not the 39:18
case many years ago we started donating 39:20
luggage to the Department of Human 39:23
Resources 39:25
and that actually came from a newspaper 39:27
article that had talked about foster 39:30
children and they were giving them 39:32
garbage bags and so I remember just 39:33
being taken by that 39:36
[Music] 39:40
article unclaimed baggage decided to 39:42
take matters into their own 39:45
hands we stopped all luggage going to 39:47
the floor anything that we sold and we 39:51
started holding these for about 2 weeks 39:53
and I can remember calling them and 39:56
saying we're on our way with their first 39:58
load and we filled the 40:00
sidewalks we decided no children in our 40:03
community was going to go with a black 40:05
bag ever again and then we started the 40:07
decorating we thought you know hey look 40:10
this is a gift so that's where we 40:12
decided to start painting 40:14
it the last third of the luggage that 40:17
ends up at uncleaned baggage gets 40:20
donated we get so much excess there 40:23
could be no way that we could sell it 40:27
all and so we have found Partners to get 40:29
this product into the hands of people 40:33
that can use it the uh Cosmetics that 40:35
are in the bag we can put those in the 40:37
back in I have a small charity 40:39
organization and uh I come to pick up 40:42
some donations from unclaim 40:45
baggage couple years ago a buddy and 40:50
mine and both uh Navy Vietnam veterans 40:53
were traveling down the road and we saw 40:56
a veteran he was homeless and he didn't 40:58
have a coat and it was pretty cold 41:00
outside so my buddy and I went purchased 41:02
the cat for him and then we decided that 41:04
well wait a while maybe there's more 41:07
people out there so him and I went 41:08
around looking for veterans or basically 41:10
anybody that needed a coat D my dentist 41:13
up here informed me that hey unclaimed 41:16
baggage has a department that they 41:18
donate stuff why don't you talk to them 41:20
then the whole thing just exploded cuz 41:22
now we had access to hundreds of coats 41:25
our charity became a distributorship if 41:29
you will we found people who needed 41:32
stuff we had a a sponsor that would give 41:34
that to us and we just gave it out and 41:38
that's that's how it is right now that's 41:40
what we've been 41:41
doing I cannot begin to give you a 41:43
number of tens of thousands of pairs of 41:45
iear probably each year comes through 41:48
our 41:50
store one year we got 41:51
55,000 pairs of glass glasses and 41:54
sunglasses from 41:57
McLean these are topnotch glasses and 41:58
readers I mean the readers these these 42:02
folks on airplanes don't buy cheap 42:05
readers with all the giving that we do 42:08
we do still have luggage available in 42:11
store what would unclean baggage be 42:12
without a few bags on the 42:14
[Music] 42:18
Shelf does it have a lot of little um 42:20
knicknacks in that brown box yes ma yeah 42:23
my dad and has all these tiny little pin 42:27
you get my voicemail no this is my 42:30
daughter phone number ah okay I don't 42:33
know how that even transpired there was 42:36
a baby picture of her we saw the name 42:38
and then we were able to look it up by 42:41
the name we went through Linkedin and 42:42
and true people search and wow 42:45
everything the woman who called back was 42:48
actually the daughter of the gentleman 42:52
that the Box belonged to 42:55
and he is deceased it wasn't me that it 42:58
was my son so thank you so much for that 43:02
is a real memory thing it was his 43:06
grandfather right really wanted she 43:10
asked that we keep the item for her for 43:13
a few days until she gets here and we'll 43:15
see you in yes ma'am I'll be here bright 43:17
ey so what did happen to all the Lost 43:22
items we've been tracking 43:25
[Music] 43:27
[Music] 43:40
what's the best thing about my 43:46
job seeing the joy in people's face when 43:48
their item is 43:51
returned 43:55

oh my goodness 200 300 400 400 billions
of people travel through airports every
year
675 with all those people comes a whole
lot of stuff so $8 number is 11 some of
that stuff ends up at this auction we do
it every fall and cleans up all the
items that people have abandon in the
airport lost in the airport automobiles
why not go for the shoe especially the
Red Box shoes 12 on that car 12 this
year we have a Mini Cooper which is one
of the nicer cars that we've seen the
Cadillac Escalade of the hor Steelers
player that one brought in a lot of
money two two but we're at the end of
the road all of this you got a nice buy
there
sir starts
here from Lost at the airport we
received a box of human remains to found
in Alabama a 40 karat Colombian in World
sometimes it's a good adventure and
sometimes not and sold at auction sold
at 7,000 this is the story of luggage
gone
[Music]
lost welcome to Seattle Tacoma
International Airport we want your
journey to be a safe one for all members
of your family wonder what happens to
your luggage after you check it
in we did today we're going to be
sending this GoPro down the Journey of
the bag and we're going to put this
protective case on here cuz we have no
idea exactly what this camera will be
encountering there we
go go ahead hello hi Sacramento the
final today great you are all set to go
awesome thank you than you
after your bag gets put on the initial
conveyor belt it goes through a series
of
conveyors sometimes several miles long
that will take the bag through an
automated security
screening if the x-ray technology
detects a Potential Threat in a bag it
sends the x-ray images to a TSA officer
who tries to resolve the threat if it's
still questionable TSA manually inspects
the bag less than 5% of bags are
physically inspected
when the bags leave security the
sortation systems will move the bags
over which then will go down a slide
down to the respective pier where an
agent will load the bag onto a
cart but these are more than just
bags they hold the clues to who we are
as
Travelers what we have in common and
What Makes Us
unique once the bags arrive out at the
aircraft they are uploaded onto the
aircraft and they're off to their
[Music]
destination or
not thanks for calling Seattle Airport
lost and found my name is Michelle how
can I help you oh my gosh oh
my oh interesting oh it's full of
stuff every day lost luggage Stacks up
an airports around the world I can't
judge a book by its cover and every item
has a different story hi how can I help
you I yeah I left something at T
yesterday what we do here is lots of
detective work Lots behind the scenes
there are people working around the
clock to reunite all the lost things
with their owners I'm looking for
Clues oh look at that this is what I
love about uh lost and found because you
can be your own
detective yeah they came from Hawaii I'm
always surprised by the type of items
that people leave

behind got document
9816 we received a Costco envelope from
[Music]
TSA it looks like maybe like personal
postcards inside the envelope is
seasonal greeting cards that's a
Christmas card in a New Year the Seattle
International airport processes about
100 lost items every
day and this is from December 28th
1976 and during the holidays that
doubles this is
12459 these envelopes are seasonal
grading cards um seem to be very um
sentimental 200 every different item has
a different sense of emotion to it maybe
we could call Costco and give them that
order number and they'll be able to pull
it
up with about 430 commercial airports in
the US we're talking millions of lost
items each
year and that's not even including the
airlines play with Alaska Airlines a
proud member of the One World l in 2021
which was a year without that much
travel we handled 43,000 left on board
[Music]
items I would say I would have at least
once a day somebody coming towards me
and say I think I left it on board
one time I was working a flight and
another passenger comes over and says
hey I was on this plane it landed I
think I I left something of value in
there I said okay well what is it and he
says it's my
dentures so I went on board and it was
there on the floor and it was just the
dentur just right there so I grabbed a
couple of napkins to pick it up and he
also seemed very relieved to find them
they'll guesty planes and typically the
items are found by our
cleaners they will log the seat that
they found it in hopefully they'll have
the flight number that had just come in
they'll give that item either to the
customer service agent that met the
flight or if it's a late at night flight
they would bring it down to the baggage
service office if nobody claims those
items then they get sent here to Central
baggage services and then we try to make
a match the way I describe it is where
the lost and found for the whole Airline
anytime something's left on the plane
whether it's a pencil a wallet an iPad
everything gets sent here within 24
hours so we have a CPAP
machine at this stage we're kind of just
processing it sorting it from high value
low value then the next agent will
actually be able to do a little bit more
research we will start with high value
items um we do prioritize these items
I'll go ahead and start with this laptop
and loging in as found report the first
step that's taken is there any obvious
signs that we can reunite this item in
here we found a boarding pass we logg
that into a technology system that will
help us identify key words in a report
that the guest has hopefully made I do
have a loss report for the same flight
oh I have two so I will open each of
these up and see if I can get a matching
name which I did at that point we would
reach out to the guest I was calling to
let you know that I was able to match
your loss Report with an item that we
found in our warehouse awesome all
righty well thank you ma'am you are so
excited everyone was like I don't know
with no tag on it it's a 5050 chance and
I was like I just got that thing oh
right I did find your boarding pass so
that helped a lot thank you so much
ma'am okay thank you so much for
choosing Alaska you have a great
day I lost my bag we are always busy
here in in the lost and found office but
we get even busier during the
holidays this past holiday season we had
a suitcase of meat come into our office
the suitcase was filled from bottom to
top with nothing but deer meat goat meat
sausage many different items one
interesting item that we saw was uh a
guy who lost a box of rocks the guy came
through and he asked have you guys seen
any rubies no we haven't seen any rubies
he said well you probably wouldn't know
if they were rubies because they're raw
they look like rocks it was a box about
like this and when we brought him out he
goes yeah that's it that's
it we've all been there before I think
it's a a common thing we can all relate
to everybody's done it before I've done
it myself oh yeah um head headrest I've
lost several headrest too embarrass to
see how many a very nice lady said ma'am
is this yours I was so embarrassed said
yes it's mine thank you it was a gift
and then I had to run back and say it's
me I left my bag on board and they said
don't you work for an airline I said yes
to this day I still miss that ground
sweater Mark Jackson please return the
checkpoint for a left behind item lost
and found handles anything left behind
in security checkpoints in any general
airport
areas
all right let's go heading to checkpoint
GRE to start the day we're lost in
problem 70% of Seattle's lost items
comes from the TSA checkpoint all right
gentlemen excuse us
please first thing in the morning we
check our lost and found database and we
compile list from all five screening
checkpoints we got
9324 we go out to each individual
checkpoint and collect all their lost
and
found and last item
9015 excuse me gentlemen pre pandemic we
collected roughly 30,000 items on a
yearly basis so that one I need High
Travel seasons do produce a lot more
loss and found your summertime your
Spring Breaks especially holiday season
through three gotta no TSA meant a lot
less lost
items before TSA was established in 2001
passengers merely had to walk through a
metal
detector no removing belts or
shoes and as for back checks what back
checks with fewer items removed fewer
items were left
behind all right how you doing we're
going to meet you out at the back door
when the office opens up here at 8:00 in
the morning all right we come downstairs
with the bin or bins and we start
turning them over to the Port of Seattle
good morning hi good morning Michelle
how are you guys I'm good how you doing
you got got a lot of stuff for me today
that's right it's 3day work right come
on in the most common items that I've
seen left behind in the security
checkpoints are usually laptops gaming
consoles iPads 7478 I guess we're moving
to the laptop MH okay one of the most
unusual items that I've picked up
through the lost and found was actually
today it was a tortilla press
7582 cuz you never know when you want a
quadal right
yeah we have to check each one of the
item especially with the
clothing and
6847 okay so let's check the pockets
sorry there's something
there in a typical travel year nearly $1
million is Left Behind at TSA
checkpoints in cash JFK Airport takes
the cake with over
$98,000 with the bags as well we have to
go through it oh a lot of
books a if we get like a perishable
items inside those bags we have to take
them out it can only stay there for 24
hours you can imagine a bag with a
banana that sits there for a month it's
not going to be pretty a you know
sometimes you can't help but to feel
sorry for the mama who's traveling with
this
[Music]
baby going through all these items is a
process
okay all right we see you later see you
later guys and sometimes that process
bears oh my gosh unusual fruit there's
actually fish
[Music]
inside all right so this bag actually
came from TSA but there's no name on it
so let's see if we can find the name
okay lots of goodies
treats oh my
gosh there's actually fish
inside like real fish why
would this is why we have to
check
it's smelly smelly
fish and I don't know why they put that
in
so sorry we'll have to dump this right
away these items need to go out from the
bag and we have to dispose it
unfortunately because it's really
perishable items I'm interested to find
out what's inside this
[Music]
bag looks like rice that is um from the
bottom of the pot I don't know this
might be like
spices oh what's in I think this is
garlic
CH okay sorry they will all go
here aha
medication there is a medication here
which gives me a clue who it belongs to
yep there's a name so we can search for
the owner I'm assuming they were
supposed to to do sushi with that fish
but sorry have to go in
there and that's about it for this
bag when we receive lost and found bags
everything has to be registered from
inside
out hopefully the name on this
medication will lead us to the owner of
the
[Applause]
bag raw fish is just one of the many
strange lost items the Dublin
International Airport has seen a left
behind toilet life-sized mannequin and
headstone Pittsburgh International
Airport has its own laundry list of
unusual items when items are left
throughout the common areas of the
terminal they are then turned into to us
at the information
desk we store those items for 30 days
and try to make every attempt to reach
the owner some of the the strange items
that we have seen over the years a pair
of souvenir alligator heads a rice maker
a carpet steamer diving equipment false
teeth a 2500 page Vietnamese to English
dictionary that was very thick about
this thick all those bracelet if they
are then unclaimed we send them offsite
in preparation for the
[Music]
auction hey Tony oh hey detective Le
before the Seattle Airport even thinks
about an auction they let an actual
detective take a stab at finding owners
you got any good stuff for me this month
Yes actually I do uh our policy is to
hold on to items for 30 days three
tablets here okay um what we would call
high value items say a laptop or tablet
or cell phone um jewelry we will turn
those over to the
police many years ago with lost and
found because I have some experience
with computer forensics I felt that my
skills would help get some property back
to folks see next month see you next
month I just try to do an additional
check to try to get them get the
property back to the
[Music]
owners one of the easiest things is
checking them for stolen
status the lost and found just doesn't
have the ability to to do that so we
checked to see if these items have been
reported stolen
and see if there's a Sim in there it
looks like it might be a foreign Sim
over the years because of people's
concerns over security and and
everything it makes it a lot harder
sometimes to actually get property back
to folks and unfortunately I'm not able
to read it it's one of those Sims that I
just I'm not able to read so with this
particular phone I'm pretty much at a at
a dead end serial number is not reported
stolen um I'm not able to get any phone
number off the um off the sim card all
right
so it is kind of frustrating that you
know we'll have a a $2,000 laptop
sitting there here and it's not reported
stolen we don't have a name and we start
running out of options so this is one
that came in last month that I still
haven't uh had a chance to get to yet
and we've got a lot of different pieces
here here and between these we should be
able to
hopefully get a name that we can get a
phone number
[Music]
on sometimes losing your luggage is out
of your
control it looks like a lot of uh gmen
must have guys have a weight and balance
issue so they didn't send a lot of that
when you're out at the airport and your
bag doesn't come off the bagage claim we
know that that feeling is really hard
I'm going to call the gate to see if
they when a bag is not able to be
identified to a guest the airports will
continue to try and find the guest for
the first 5 days on the sixth day the
bag is then tagged to be sent here to
Central
baggage where we will begin a more
intensive search there's a a a tag with
a name there is some sense of ownership
on our part that we didn't necessarily
care for that item like we should have
I'm sorry that your baggage didn't get
to go with you we have it here and we
certainly want to get it back to you
it's in our nature to want to rectify
that situation this is a left on board
item as of right now we have yet to find
that owner a photo album that was given
from we believe a wife to a husband we
nicknamed The Gentleman on the front the
pointing guy because throughout the
whole entire book all he is doing is
pointing Every Witch Way at every item a
left behind item is a little bit
different than a checked item because we
don't necessarily know who that item
belonged to so we created a found report
hoping that the guest had submitted a
lost report as of right now there was no
trace results which means that nothing
in our system matched the two of them we
actually pulled out every single photo
hoping that there was something written
on the back of one of them no luck there
in one of the photos towards the
back there is a boat which is registered
within the state of
Washington and so I ended up up calling
the state of Washington to see if I
could get any vessel information but
doesn't this look like him what's next
for us is we're hoping to actually use
the power of social media in our favor
that looks like Lake Chalan and so we
just hope that everyone can help us try
and figure out who the pointing guy
is checked baggage on the other hand has
a better chance of making it home the
amount of times that we're unable to
reunite a check bag with a guest is very
small we're talking a fraction of a
percent across all Airlines the chance
of never getting your bag back is less
than half a
percent but with billions of people
traveling every year that half a percent
adds up we're talking over a million
bags
worldwide many of them end up
[Music]
here my name is uh DNE gri
my job here at unclean baggage as
Transportation specialist I go all over
the country Coast to Coast picking up
lost luggage from
Airlines I'm picking up luggage on a
weekly basis a lot of miles a lot of
hours uh I listen to a lot of podcast U
I listen to a lot of top radio probably
too much
sometimes sometimes just
music sometimes I'm Amazed by the number
of bags that we
get
every day I open
dozens it depends on the size it depends
on what's in the bag I usually open
dozen Poncho kitchen wear M lots of
cologne lots of
[Music]
shoes we're at inclan baggage and we're
a retail store in Scottsboro Alabama and
we work and partner directly with the
major airlines and we sell unclaimed
baggage
it's a nice shirt have some nice clean
socks clean these shoes look pretty good
that all I got started with my
dad who was a ham radio operator back in
the
1960s one day a gentleman got on the
radio and said I heard this big problem
with unclaimed bags we have so many of
them we don't know what to do with them
my dad uh he said I think I see an
opportunity there I may be able to help
you my dad borrowed $300 from one of my
grandfathers he borrowed my other
grandfather's 1965 Chevy C10 pickup
truck and he headed up towards
Washington DC and bought his first load
of unan bags from Trailway bus
lines and and then we segwayed into the
airline world air travel in the 70s
looked a little different than it does
today the new 747 jet boasted spiral
staircases and smoking was permitted the
alcohol was flowing and meals were
carved to
order sitting in coats was like going to
the movies in the early' 70s it would
have started with Eastern Airlines and
they lost a ton of bags that was our
first Airline and now we work with
pretty much all of them throughout the
industry in 50 years of going through
other people's stuff they've come across
some surprising
items one of the most noteworthy to me
is the 40 karat Colombian
emerald it was in the toe of a sock
rolled up in the corner of a
suitcase I don't think I'll ever forget
[Music]
it today Dwayne is the guy delivering
all this unclaimed baggage to Scottsboro
and that's where this process begins
Miss debah here's your next bag thank
you as they're opening the bag going
through their archaeological dig they're
deciding if we're going to sell it if we
need to recycle it or if we need to
donate it and this is a nice surprise
ceramic heater we open bags soort
everything out send them to the
Departments that where they
belong that's nice The Beetles yeah a
third of everything we get is recycled
nice pants check the
pockets more underwear everything looks
pretty fresh that's nice so obviously
people travel with undergarments we
never sell any used undergarments we're
going to recycle those with fabric waste
you will be amazed at how many people
travel with brand new and packaged
underwear we'll price those and put them
on our cell FL to sell it does feel like
I'm stepping into somebody else's life
like this might be a ukulele
and I
like seeing where people have
been make sure make sure it's in tune or
Out Of
Tune the bags usually tell a story and
you never know what you're going to find
and it's kind of an adventure kind of at
times sometimes it's a good adventure
and sometimes not so one of the most
hair raising things we found at
unclaimed baggage was a live rattlesnake
one of our openers as she was opening a
duffel
bag a live rattlesnake came slithering
out of it I think that they released it
out behind the building yeah to let him
live on live another
day in Pittsburgh some of the most
surprising unclaimed items are cars the
abandoned vehicles are always the most
popular items we're usually left with
between 10 and 20 cars a year
we contact the owners the police contact
the owners Department of Transportation
contacts the owners and if there's still
no response from those folks then it
comes to us for the auction $2500 on
Nissan 1,000 bid 122 1,000 get 122 get
12 $1,100 on the KNE side now 12 I think
some of the cars can be left behind if
people are on maybe extended vacations
1,000 2,000 3 4 4 4 5 5 6
if the car doesn't have a lot of value
they may not want to pay some of the
parking fees or the towing storage fees
that the airport would charge and they
just simply abandon the
car1 sold it 7,000 there are some left
behind items that hold more of a
sentimental value so got this bag a
couple of weeks
ago I'm going to do a secondary research
on
it got this Brown case here let's see
what's in this
case oh
[Music]
interesting got this Brown case here
what we're looking at now is a Ace
Hardware bag with a brown box
photos Metals military Metals Inside the
Box what we have are military Metals a
name tag and a lot of pictures we got a
naval Reserve organization Association
card and a selective Services card since
those are all in one person's name I'm
going to try and look him up so I've got
one person in Kansas they're
51 so that would not be them because of
the selector Services card it's going
back to to
55 and then I have another person but
they're
deceased we also have a photograph of a
baby which has a date of
1987 and it also has her name on there
let's try the young lady that was
actually on this picture we have her
listed here as
well I've been able to find several
people that appear to be associated with
this person I've placed several phone
calls yes hi Maryann my name is Tony so
hopefully one of these people know who
this is and we'll call
back looks like shirts back in Alabama a
third of all the luggage unclaimed
baggage receives is sold and it looks
clean but we'll launder
it we're very proud of our laundry
facility uh we are actually the largest
in the state of Alabama we process more
in one month than most of them do in an
entire
year it's just surprising what people
Tak in their luggage dishes uh
silverware water bottles is it's there
is a lot of
those I guess the one that stands up
most I washed car mats why somebody took
that on their vacation I don't
know Electronics get the full workup
too most we get in is usually headphones
stuff like that so it's really just
getting all germs everything cleaned off
after we clean them we test them to make
sure they're functioning and from there
they're going to data wipe
everything our pricers will then price
the merchandise whether it's apparel
shoes Jewelry accessories
Electronics the jewelry counter is where
you'll find some big ticket items this
this diamond engagement ring appraised
for a little over $10,000 and we have it
listed for a little over
$5,000 this is a emerald inam tennis
bracelet we have it listed at a little
over
$14,000 but there are some things you
can't put a price tag on in the 9s a
shipping container showed up with a
guidance system for fighter jets and
it's a the department of the US Navy
handle with Extreme Caution I am worth
my weight in
gold the actual gold is authenticated
appraised priced and put on the
floor these look like they are diamonds
but then I can also use my diamond
tester and it does test
Diamond this ruby ring is currently the
most expensive item in the
[Music]
store the most expensive item we've ever
sold in our store was a men's Platinum
prolex it's just a pretty cool
experience to come be a part of and see
what all people
lose okay Lot number one we have a whole
lot of ear ranks some of the lost
jewelry in Pittsburgh has people
scratching their heads we are always
surprised with how many wedding rings
are turned in to the lost and found
mainly men's wedding rings we're not
sure why a lot of them are claimed but
there are still a good amount that are
turned over to us at the auction we also
this year have a pair of stiletto heels
that are brand new um so I think that
will maybe draw in the
ladies I think that people are
interested in just seeing what items are
left
behind hi uh I lost the case of
harmonicas is there any chance that you
guys have it okay let me go see if I can
find it I grabbed it off the plane and
then I was coming here and I went
outside to wait for my ride and I just
like set it against the
wall I thought for sure that it was
gone
yeah thankfully some kind soul decided
to uh turn it in they were pretty
intrigued by what was
inside thank you so much
[Music]
apprciate yeah so
work if you lose an item at one of
paris's airports it will eventually end
up at the world's very first lost and
found office established by Napoleon in
1804 the Bureau of found objects has
received a human skull a Taxidermy
Lobster and a saber from
1892 this is one that came in last month
that I still but in Seattle some of the
Lost items end up with this guy
um the logo on here doesn't appear to go
with any sort of
school I'm looking for something that
may talk about like a particular school
then I can know a particular City where
that person lives when we go to get a
name a lot of times it helps if we have
middle initials information like that um
or a city will help as well what we
have
kidss Kindle Fire on that Kindle Fire
tablet the parent had set up two
profiles for the kids he just used
initials for the children we got a name
and a midle
initial did you lose something file a
lost item we might get lucky with this
name I have uh different databases that
I can use and if it's a unique enough
name I can try to track down the owner
that way we only got one let's give it a
call sometimes the time zone can help me
kind of pinpoint the region and increase
the chances that I'm actually getting
the correct person hi this is detective
donin with the pter Seattle Police
Department sometimes there's enough
breadcrumbs of items in a in a
particular bag that allows me to kind of
track them down yep yep Curious George
is here he's sitting on my desk yeah so
we got the uh the Kindle the um backpack
the colorful backpack the uh um Curious
George and we'll get him
home Curious George is lucky he'll make
it home but at unclaimed baggage
millions of items end up in other
people's homes some of those items
aren't what you'd expect it's amazing
what people travel with about 20 years
ago they had this automatic in and I I
mean oh uh I said is that for sale and
they said yes and I said I want it this
is uh a charm bracelet that I have been
uh collecting charm for several years
one of the most interesting things that
we've gotten consistently over the years
have been wedding gowns I can remember
at least two full suits of armor we've
had a number of kilts a number of bag
pipes we we actually had a a camera show
up that was was a camera for the space
shuttle had been on space shuttle
missions and and we got that back into
the hands of
NASA for the Seattle Airport lost and
found getting items back into the right
hands is the goal okay so we'll get the
label that's the possible owner because
it matches the medication we'll give
them a call Mrs K oh it's your mom oh
gotcha you know we found um vegetables
and fish in there I did find a a match
for the bag with the raw fish it looks
like they did file a loss report and
unfortunately yeah can't stay in the bag
so we have to throw them away okay the
bag is confirmed with the owner and they
will pick it up tomorrow all right we'll
see you tomorrow Mr
Kim at the end of the day there are
ultimately items that go
unclaimed many of them are donated to
various
organizations but some go to the dogs
our bomb can9 unit uses some of the
suitcases and clothing items and even
some of the the cosmetics and toiletry
items in these unclaimed bags because
they're able to then incorporate that
into their training for their bomb
dogs good morning again l ladies and
gentlemen we'd like to welcome you all
to the auction we're glad if the
electronics are still in good shape we
can send them off to auction and lost
and found from the airport accumulation
for the oneyear period we're here at
Pittsburgh International Airport's
annual auction we're getting ready to
auction off all of the loss and found
and items that were abandoned throughout
the last year here at the airport come
on now let's have a sale sale
time it's always interesting to see what
items get left here I'm looking for uh
Hardware either myself or for resale
when I saw these lots of laptops I'm
hoping to donate them to my Civil Air
Patrol unit Electronics they their ear
pods I would be on that truck but she'll
kill me if I drive it home so I I can't
do
that that Mini Cooper seems like a nice
car I'm going to bid on it and see what
happens the auction company will accept
the money order Cashers check certified
check this year there's a Mini Cooper
and pickup truck so personally I'm
interested to see you know what are the
cars going for those are always the big
ticket items here one of the cars we did
have was a former Pittsburgh Steelers
player he had since moved on to Chicago
his car was parked here in the lot and
he just never responded and didn't come
back and get his car so It ultimately
went to auction it was a Cadillac
Escalade at London's heow airport the
unclaimed baggage gets auctioned off
twice a month the difference here is
there's no peeking in the bags before
you bid going once anybody bit 15,000
going twice anybody bit 15,000 000 sold
it
$4,750 out of all the Left Behind items
the Mini Cooper brought in the most cash
but every single item was sold this is
like totally crazy like I had not
expected like any kind of this kind of
stuff but being a big fan of the NFL and
the Steelers I got a couple of our game
waren
jerseys nice and dirty meaning their
game
one I won six lots of jewelry how much
did I spend uh 2600 275 for pones that's
not bad $8,000 which was actually our
our limit why not go for the shoes
especially the red bottom shoes I think
it's still setting in that I actually
won them most years at the airport
Authority auction raises more than
$150,000 the money that's raised goes to
the airport Authority Foundation which
supports military scholarships those
types of things yeah this is our first
time probably won't be the last though
oh yeah come back next year for sure go
home and play with our new toys
an auction is one way to get rid of
uncleaned baggage but at the unclaim
baggage center there's so much lost
stuff it's impossible to sell it
[Music]
all at unclaimed baggage you might think
you'd find a lot of well baggage but
that's not the
case many years ago we started donating
luggage to the Department of Human
Resources
and that actually came from a newspaper
article that had talked about foster
children and they were giving them
garbage bags and so I remember just
being taken by that
[Music]
article unclaimed baggage decided to
take matters into their own
hands we stopped all luggage going to
the floor anything that we sold and we
started holding these for about 2 weeks
and I can remember calling them and
saying we're on our way with their first
load and we filled the
sidewalks we decided no children in our
community was going to go with a black
bag ever again and then we started the
decorating we thought you know hey look
this is a gift so that's where we
decided to start painting
it the last third of the luggage that
ends up at uncleaned baggage gets
donated we get so much excess there
could be no way that we could sell it
all and so we have found Partners to get
this product into the hands of people
that can use it the uh Cosmetics that
are in the bag we can put those in the
back in I have a small charity
organization and uh I come to pick up
some donations from unclaim
baggage couple years ago a buddy and
mine and both uh Navy Vietnam veterans
were traveling down the road and we saw
a veteran he was homeless and he didn't
have a coat and it was pretty cold
outside so my buddy and I went purchased
the cat for him and then we decided that
well wait a while maybe there's more
people out there so him and I went
around looking for veterans or basically
anybody that needed a coat D my dentist
up here informed me that hey unclaimed
baggage has a department that they
donate stuff why don't you talk to them
