There was a man named Abram.

He was from Chaldea, a region in the Middle East.

He was rich; he had many herds and lived in the desert in a large camp with his family and his whole tribe.

One day he said to Sarai his wife and to his nephew Lot:

"Get ready, we are leaving.

The Lord spoke to me and said, ‘Leave your country for the place that I will show you.

I will make you into a great nation, I will bless you, I will make your name great. Be a blessing.’"

"Where are we going, Abram?"

"I do not know, Sarai, but God knows, and he will guide us."

[Music]

So the big tents were taken down.

The herds of goats and sheep were gathered together.

And without wasting any time, they left their country, not knowing where they were going.

After many days of walking,

they arrived in the land of Canaan.

Was this the land promised by God?

As they passed through the territory of Shechem, by the Oak of Mamre,

Abram signaled for everyone to stop.

"Let’s set up our camp here!"

"The Lord has spoken to me!

We will stay in this land that God has chosen for our good.

I will build an altar to thank him and to pray to him every day."

And Abram did exactly as he had said.

One night in the camp,

a night full of stars,

while he was sleeping,

the Lord woke him and said:

"Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward will be very great."

Abram smiled; God was his friend.

God was guiding him in this new land and protecting him from danger.

Yet in his heart he felt a deep sadness.

Abram said to God:

"My Lord, what will you give me?

I am going away without a child!"

Abram sighed. He and Sarai would never have children.

They were far too old now.

So that night, under the starry sky, they sighed.

The Lord led him outside his tent and said:

"Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can.

Oh, I cannot count all the stars, there are hundreds of them.

So shall your descendants be!

You will become the father of many nations,

and kings will be born from you.

From now on, your name will no longer be Abram but Abraham, which means ‘father of a multitude’.

And Sarai will be called Sarah, which means ‘princess’.

I will bless her, and she will give birth to a son.

Abraham was amazed at God’s promise and praised the Lord.

Yet they could not help laughing to themselves, thinking,

"How could a child be born to a man of 100 years and a woman of 90 years?"

Ah, Abraham was very old.

But God said to him:

"Next year at this same time, Sarah will give birth to a son, and you will name him Isaac."

Abraham trusted the word of the Lord, as incredible as it was.

The days went by.

The dry season arrived.

A heavy heat fell upon the camp.

At noon, no one dared to go outside.

But that day, as Abraham sat at the entrance of his tent, he saw three men coming.

What could they be doing, walking under the burning sun without even a skin of water?

Abraham ran to meet them and bowed before them to greet them:

He said to the first one, "My Lord, please do me the honor of stopping at my home.

The three men entered the tent in silence.

Abraham was deeply moved by their presence.

He wanted to welcome his guests like kings.

He ordered one of his servants, "Quickly, bring some water so my guests can wash the dust from their feet."

While they were refreshing themselves,

Abraham invited the three men to lie down in the shade of the great oaks: "Rest here!

I will go and get a piece of bread to comfort your hearts before you go on your way."

"Do as you have said!"

Abraham ran to his tent to find Sarah and said to her, "Sarah, hurry! Take three measures of the finest flour and knead the best loaves."

Still running,

Abraham went to his herd,

chose a tender, good calf for the meal,

and told his servant to prepare it with great care for a feast.

Then he went back to his guests,

his arms full with a dish of creamy butter and a large jug of milk.

Soon Sarah’s golden, steaming loaves were in the basket she handed to them.

He poured the milk into their cups,

and he stood near them.

The three visitors ate, honoring the feast.

At the end of the meal, they asked, "Where is Sarah, your wife?"

"She is in the tent."

"I will return to you next year at this time, and then your wife Sarah will have a son."

What a surprise!

The visitor’s words were just like God’s promise.

Then Abraham looked carefully at the three persons near him,

and the more he looked, the more joy filled his heart; he was overflowing with happiness.

Sarah, at the entrance of the tent, had also heard the visitor’s words.

She began to laugh quietly to herself, saying, "How can this be possible?

I am too old to have children; I am worn out, and Abraham is old."

"Why did Sarah laugh?

Is anything too wonderful for God?

At this same time next year I will come back to you, and Sarah will have a son."

Then Sarah’s eyes were opened, just like Abraham’s.

These three strangers were—yes, they were—God’s messengers.

Afraid she had offended them, she said, "I did not laugh!"

"Yes, you did laugh."

Sarah then kept a respectful silence.

And when the visitors left them, she thanked the Lord that, for the time of one meal,

he had brought heaven down to earth.

The year passed,

and just as God had promised,

she gave birth to a son named Isaac.

Then God smiled on Abraham.

il y avait un homme appelé Abram 

il était de chaldée région du moyen orient

Riches,  il possédait plusieurs troupeaux et habiter  dans le désert dans un grand campement avec  sa famille et toute sa tribu

Un jour il dit à Saraï son épouse et à son neveu lot : 

Préparez-vous nous partons,

le Seigneur m'a parlé, il m'a dit : quitte ton pays pour le lieu que je  t'indiquerai,

je ferai de toi un grand peuple, je te bénirai, je magnifierai ton nom. Soit une bénédiction

Où allons-nous Abram ?  

Je ne sais pas Saraï mais dieu le sait il nous guidera

Alors, les grandes tentes furent rouler.

Les troupeaux de chèvres et de moutons rassembler. 

Et sans perdre de temps ils quittèrent leur  pays sans savoir où ils allaient.

après des jours de marche,

ils arrivèrent dans le pays de Canaan

Etait-ce la terre promise par Dieu?

Alors qu'ils traversaient le territoire de Sichem,  au Chêne de Mambré

Abraham fit signe d'arrêter

Installons ici notre camp !

le Seigneur m'a parlé !

Nous séjournerons sur cette  terre que dieu a choisi pour notre bien

Je dresserai un hôtel pour le remercier et le prier chaque jour.

Et Abram fit comme il l'avait dit.

Une nuit dans le campement,

une nuit pleine d'étoiles,

alors qu'il dormait,

le Seigneur l'éveilla et lui dit :

ne crains pas Abram, je suis ton bouclier, ta récompense sera grande.

Abram souris, Dieu était son ami,

Il le guidais sur la nouvelle terre et le protéger des dangers.

Pourtant dans son cœur, il avait une grande tristesse

Abram dit à Dieu :

Mon Seigneur ! que me donnerais-tu ?

je m'en vais sans enfant !

Abram soupira ! Lui et Saraï n'aurai jamais d'enfants.

Ils  étaient trop âgés à présent.

Alors cette nuit là, dans la nuit remplie d'étoiles, ils soupiraient.

le Seigneur l'entraîna en dehors de sa tente  et lui dit:

lève les yeux au ciel et dénombre,  les étoiles si tu le peux  

oh! je ne peux compter toutes les étoiles, elles sont des centaines  

Tel sera ta postérité !

Tu deviendras père d'une multitude de nations

et des rois naîtront de toi  

Ton nom, désormais, n'est plus Abram mais Abraham ce qui veut dire père d'une multitude

et Saraî portera le nom de Sarah ce qui signifie princesse 

Je la bénirai et elle donnera un fils  

Abraham s'émerveilla de la promesse de dieu et loua le Seigneur 

Pourtant ils se prêtent à rire en pensant,

comment un fils pourrait-il en être d'un homme de  100 ans et d'une femme de 90 ans

Ah!! Abraham était  très âgé.

Mais Dieu lui dit : 

l'an prochain à cette saison, Sarah donnera le jour à un fils et tu lui donneras le nom d'Isaac

Abraham cru en la Parole du Seigneur aussi incroyable qu'Elle soit

Les jours passèrent.

La saison sèche était arrivée,

Une chaleur pesante  s'abattait sur le campement

A l'heure de midi, personne ne se risquait au dehors.

Mais ce jour là, Abraham assis à l'entrée  de sa tente vit arrivé trois hommes

Que pouvait-il faire à marcher sous  le soleil brûlant sans même une outre d'eau,   

Abraham se précipite à leur rencontre et s'inclina devant eux pour les saluer:

il s'adressa aux premiers: Mon Seigneur! fais-moi l'honneur de t'arrêter chez moi.

les trois hommes entrèrent sous la  tente, silencieux !

Abraham était impressionné  d'une telle présence.

Il voulu accueillir  ses hôtes comme des rois.

Il ordonna à l'un de ses serviteurs: apporte vite de l'eau pour que mes hôtes puisse laver la poussière de leurs pieds.

Alors qu'ils se rafraîchissaient,

Abraham  invita les trois hommes à venir s'allonger à  l'ombre de grands chênes: reposez-vous!

Le temps  que j'aille chercher un morceau de pain pour vous réconforter le cœur avant d'aller plus loin   

fais comme tu as dit!

Abraham couru vers sa tente pour trouver Sarah et lui dit : Sarah hâte-toi ! prends trois bonnes mesures de la plus belle farine et pétri des meilleures galettes

Toujours courant

Abraham alla près de son troupeau,

choisi un veau tendre et bon pour le repas

et recommande à son serviteur de redoubler  d'adresse pour lui faire un festin.

Puis  il revint vers ses hôtes,

des bras chargés d'une jade de beurre crémeux et d'un grand pot de lait.

Bientôt les galettes dorées de Sarah fumait  dans la corbeille qui leur tendit

Il versa le lait dans leur coupe

il resta debout près d'eux

Les trois visiteurs mangèrent faisant honneur au festin

A la fin du repas,  ils demandaient: où et Sarah ta femme   

elle est dans la tente,

je reviendrai vers toi l'an prochain, alors ta femme Sarah aura un fils.

Quelle surprise!

la parole du visiteur était semblable à la promesse de Dieu.

Alors Abraham regarda avec attention les trois  personnes près de lui,

et plus ils regardaient,  plus son cœur était joyeux il jubilait

Sarah, à l'entrée de la tente avait aussi entendu la parole du visiteur.

elle se mit à rire doucement en elle-même en se disant mais comment cela est-il possible?

Je n'ai plus l'âge d'enfanter, je suis fanée et et Abraham est vieux.

Pourquoi Sarah a-t-elle rit

y a t'il rien de trop merveilleux pour Dieu.  

A la même saison, l'an prochain, je reviendrai chez toi et Sarah aura un fils

Alors les yeux de Sarah s'ouvrirent comme ceux d'Abraham.

Ces trois étrangers étaient, oui! ils étaient les messagers de Dieu.

Par peur de les avoir offensés, elle dit: je n'ai pas ri!

si ! tu a ri

Sarah garda le silence respectueusement.

Et quand les visiteurs les quittèrent, elle remercia le  Seigneur d'avoir, le temps d'un repas,

fait descendre le ciel sur la terre.

L'année passa,

Et comme Dieu l'avait promis 

Elle donna naissance à un fils nommé Isaac

Alors Dieu sourit à Abraham
