A high-performance mindset requires 00:18
being eager in the face of the mundane 00:20
and the vexing. Cuz that is what you are 00:23
going to face if you want to do 00:26
something remarkable. I think part of 00:28
the challenge of understanding this is 00:29
simply that 00:31
we see the products of that mundanity of 00:32
handling those things that are vexing 00:36
and confusing. And so you might see an 00:37
NBA player at the peak of their career 00:40
doing something amazing. 00:42
But you don't see the precursors to 00:45
that. Training in basketball for me was 00:47
so boring. 00:50
I remember doing entire sessions when I 00:55
first started playing cuz I was behind 00:57
the curve and I I needed to catch up. 00:59
Catching a ball, doing a pivot, pivoting 01:01
back, passing the ball. 01:04
For half an hour. But that's what you 01:06
need to be able to tolerate if you want 01:08
to achieve great success because it 01:10
comes through handling stuff that 01:12
frustrates and confuses you. 01:14
And it comes through repetition ad 01:17
nauseam of things that seem small and 01:20
unimportant until they're combined. 01:23
A model to help you embrace mundanity as 01:37
you seek your goal 01:40
is the FEE model. Focus, effort, 01:42
execution. Focus. Focus is the idea that 01:45
you can curate your whole attention into 01:48
this moment, regardless of how dull and 01:52
uninteresting it might feel, regardless 01:55
of how consequential or important for 01:57
your future it might be in your mind. 01:59
Can you lever your whole mental 02:05
faculties to that point in time and pay 02:08
attention in a really proactive way? 02:11
Effort is the first E. It seems obvious. 02:17
The idea that if you're going to achieve 02:22
something, frankly, whether it be 02:23
remarkable or ordinary, 02:25
you have to put in some effort. It seems 02:28
obvious, but most people don't think 02:30
that. And indeed, most people spend most 02:31
of their life, whether it be at work or 02:34
in sport, seeing just how many 02:35
percentage points off 100% they can 02:38
offer. 02:40
Can I offer 97%? It's almost like a game 02:44
people play at work. How little effort 02:46
can I get away with? Rather than 02:49
thinking, how about for the time that 02:51
I'm doing this, which will not be 02:53
forever, and should not be forever, but 02:54
for the focused amount of time I'm doing 02:57
this, my effort will be 100%. 02:59
Execution. Practicing in a way that is 03:05
very conscious of the right ways of 03:08
doing things, of the structures that 03:11
must be in place, of the movement of 03:13
your body, of the activity of your 03:15
brain. 03:17
A really conscious execution-minded 03:19
effort. 03:22
Somebody did a great disservice to 03:23
the idea of practice by misunderstanding 03:27
the research on practice. They just say, 03:29
"Practice makes perfect." And it's like, 03:32
"No, it doesn't. No, no, no, no." 03:33
Well-executed 03:35
practice makes perfect. 03:37

[Português]
Uma mentalidade de alto desempenho exige
ter entusiasmo diante do que é monótono
e irritante. Porque é exatamente isso que você
vai enfrentar se quiser fazer
algo extraordinário. Acho que parte da
dificuldade em entender isso é
simplesmente porque
só vemos o resultado daquela monotonia,
de lidar com o que é irritante
e confuso.
disso.
no esporte, testando quantos
por cento abaixo de 100% eles podem
entregar.
Será que posso entregar 97%? É quase um jogo
que as pessoas jogam no trabalho. Com o mínimo de esforço
eu consigo me safar?
Eles apenas dizem:
"A prática leva à perfeição". E é tipo:
"Não, não leva. Não, de jeito nenhum".
A prática bem executada
é que leva à perfeição.
