step exactly and it's funny because
often we're not even considering the
possibility that the outcome could be
positive it's always about the worst
case
scenario I had a moment like that
recently with a project I started I kept
thinking what if it's not perfect what
if people don't like it but once I took
action and got started I realized the
fear was way worse than the actual
experience so it's almost like we get
stuck in our own heads and build these
huge mountains out of small mole Hills
do you have any tips for how people can
stop themselves from overthinking and
start taking
action one big tip is to set small
manageable goals when we try to do
everything at once we get
overwhelmed so break things down for
example instead of saying I need to
start a business break it down into
smaller steps like today I'll research
the market or this week I'll write a
plan small wins add up
I love that small goals feel less
intimidating and it's easier to focus on
the task at hand and I've noticed that
once you achieve those little wins you
start building momentum you feel more
confident and you're less likely to get
stuck in your
head exactly momentum is key and also
give yourself permission to fail I know
it sounds strange but failure is part of
the process if you're too afraid of
making a mistake you'll never try
anything at all I've learned that you
don't have to be perfect you just have
to be willing to
try that's so true it's like we all know
that we learn from mistakes but
sometimes we let that fear of failure
keep us from doing anything at all
another way to stop overthinking is to
set a deadline for your decision making
like instead of thinking about something
for weeks or months decide that you'll
make a choice by the end of the week and
then stick to it
I love deadlines they force you to take
action I've had to do that with projects
before if I give myself an unlimited
amount of time I'll just keep putting it
off but if I say okay I'm going to make
this decision by Friday it helps me move
forward
exactly and I think people underestimate
how much time they spend just thinking
about something you can easily spend
hours or days going back and forth in
your mind when you could have spent that
time actually doing the thing you were
worried about and when you do finally
take action you realize that it's never
as bad as you thought sometimes it's
just about getting out of your own way
and trusting the process so true it's
like when you're in school and you have
a big test coming up you might be so
stressed about it for days but once you
sit down and take the test it's not as
hard as you
imagined it's the same with starting a
new project or taking on something
new exactly
and it's also helpful to remember that
overthinking is a habit and habits can
be broken so be patient with yourself
it's about creating a new mindset of
action instead of
[Music]
fear all right before we wrap up let's
take a quick break with a fun fact did
you know that the average person spends
up to 60% of their time in a state of
overthinking that's a lot of energy
wasted right wow
60% that's crazy imagine what we could
do with all that time if we focused on
action instead of worry seriously if we
could shift just a fraction of that
energy into taking action we could
accomplish so much
more so to sum it up overthinking
doesn't help us make better decisions in
fact it usually just holds us back but
by setting small goals creating
deadlines and allowing ourselves to fail
we can break free from the cycle of
overthinking and start taking real
action Jeff thank you so much for
joining us today and sharing your
insights thanks Lisa it was great to
talk about this and I hope it helps some
people out there take that first
step I'm sure it will and to everyone
listening remember action over
overthinking start small stay consistent
and most importantly don't be afraid to
fail that's how we learn and grow thanks
for tuning in and we'll see you next
time on the simple English podcast take
care
[Music]
everyone all right it's time to learn
some important vocabulary related to the
topic the first word of today is
overthink it means to think about
something too much especially in a way
that makes it more complicated or
stressful than it needs to be example I
I tend to overthink every decision which
makes it harder for me to move forward
next word is procrastinate it means to
delay or postpone doing something often
because of fear lack of motivation or
distraction example instead of taking
action I procrastinated on starting my
project for
weeks next word is paralyze it means to
cause someone or something to become
unable to move or act often due to fear
anxiety or indecision
example the fear of failing can paralyze
you making it impossible to take the
first step next word is
momentum it means the force or energy
gained by an object or person as they
continue to move forward or make
progress example after completing the
first task I gained momentum and
finished the entire project in one day
the last word is fear of
failure it means the anxiety or worry
about not succeeding or making mistakes
which can prevent someone from taking
action example his fear of failure held
him back from starting his own business
