that a lot of us struggle with 00:12
overthinking it's something that can 00:15

things we want to do but don't worry 00:21
we've got the answers and joining me 00:24

[Music] 00:40
episode Jeff welcome to the show thanks 00:44
for having me 00:48
Lisa I'm really excited to be here and 00:49
talk about this topic overthinking is 00:52
something I know all too well in fact I 00:54
think a lot of people can relate 00:57
definitely it's like that little voice 01:00
in your head that keeps you up at night 01:02
asking what if or what could go wrong it 01:04
can be exhausting right exactly you 01:08
start thinking about all the 01:12
possibilities and then you end up doing 01:13
nothing the more you think the less you 01:15
act it's a vicious 01:17
cycle So today we're going to talk about 01:20
how to break free from that cycle how to 01:23
stop overthinking and start taking 01:26
action we'll share practical tips tips 01:28
and real life examples so you can get 01:30
out of your head and into motion and 01:31
Jeff you've got some personal stories to 01:34
share 01:36
right Absolutely I'll be sharing some of 01:37
my own struggles with overthinking and 01:40
how I turned it around it wasn't easy 01:42
but it was worth 01:44
it great let's dive 01:46
[Music] 01:49
in so to kick things off why do you 01:52
think we get stuck in this Loop of 01:55
overthinking well overthinking often 01:58
comes from fear fear of failure fear of 02:00
making the wrong decision fear of what 02:03
others might think it's like we try to 02:05
predict every possible outcome and and 02:07
when we do that we paralyze 02:09
ourselves right we try to be so prepared 02:11
that we end up doing nothing I think a 02:14
lot of people can relate to that feeling 02:17
like let's say you want to start a new 02:19
job or take on a new project but you 02:21
keep thinking what if I fail what if I'm 02:24
not good 02:27
enough the more you think about it the 02:28
harder it becomes to take the first 02:31
step exactly and it's funny because 02:33
often we're not even considering the 02:37
possibility that the outcome could be 02:39
positive it's always about the worst 02:41
case 02:43
scenario I had a moment like that 02:44
recently with a project I started I kept 02:46
thinking what if it's not perfect what 02:48
if people don't like it but once I took 02:51
action and got started I realized the 02:53
fear was way worse than the actual 02:55
experience so it's almost like we get 02:57
stuck in our own heads and build these 02:59
huge mountains out of small mole Hills 03:01
do you have any tips for how people can 03:04
stop themselves from overthinking and 03:06
start taking 03:08
action one big tip is to set small 03:09
manageable goals when we try to do 03:12
everything at once we get 03:14
overwhelmed so break things down for 03:16
example instead of saying I need to 03:19
start a business break it down into 03:20
smaller steps like today I'll research 03:22
the market or this week I'll write a 03:25
plan small wins add up 03:27
I love that small goals feel less 03:30
intimidating and it's easier to focus on 03:33
the task at hand and I've noticed that 03:36
once you achieve those little wins you 03:39
start building momentum you feel more 03:41
confident and you're less likely to get 03:44
stuck in your 03:46
head exactly momentum is key and also 03:47
give yourself permission to fail I know 03:51
it sounds strange but failure is part of 03:53
the process if you're too afraid of 03:55
making a mistake you'll never try 03:57
anything at all I've learned that you 03:59
don't have to be perfect you just have 04:01
to be willing to 04:04
try that's so true it's like we all know 04:06
that we learn from mistakes but 04:09
sometimes we let that fear of failure 04:11
keep us from doing anything at all 04:13
another way to stop overthinking is to 04:16
set a deadline for your decision making 04:18
like instead of thinking about something 04:21
for weeks or months decide that you'll 04:23
make a choice by the end of the week and 04:25
then stick to it 04:27
I love deadlines they force you to take 04:29
action I've had to do that with projects 04:32
before if I give myself an unlimited 04:35
amount of time I'll just keep putting it 04:37
off but if I say okay I'm going to make 04:39
this decision by Friday it helps me move 04:42
forward 04:45
exactly and I think people underestimate 04:47
how much time they spend just thinking 04:50
about something you can easily spend 04:52
hours or days going back and forth in 04:54
your mind when you could have spent that 04:57
time actually doing the thing you were 04:59
worried about and when you do finally 05:01
take action you realize that it's never 05:03
as bad as you thought sometimes it's 05:05
just about getting out of your own way 05:08
and trusting the process so true it's 05:10
like when you're in school and you have 05:13
a big test coming up you might be so 05:15
stressed about it for days but once you 05:17
sit down and take the test it's not as 05:19
hard as you 05:22
imagined it's the same with starting a 05:23
new project or taking on something 05:25
new exactly 05:28
and it's also helpful to remember that 05:30
overthinking is a habit and habits can 05:32
be broken so be patient with yourself 05:35
it's about creating a new mindset of 05:38
action instead of 05:40
[Music] 05:42
fear all right before we wrap up let's 05:45
take a quick break with a fun fact did 05:48
you know that the average person spends 05:50
up to 60% of their time in a state of 05:52
overthinking that's a lot of energy 05:55
wasted right wow 05:57
60% that's crazy imagine what we could 06:00
do with all that time if we focused on 06:03
action instead of worry seriously if we 06:05
could shift just a fraction of that 06:08
energy into taking action we could 06:10
accomplish so much 06:12
more so to sum it up overthinking 06:14
doesn't help us make better decisions in 06:17
fact it usually just holds us back but 06:20
by setting small goals creating 06:22
deadlines and allowing ourselves to fail 06:24
we can break free from the cycle of 06:28
overthinking and start taking real 06:30
action Jeff thank you so much for 06:33
joining us today and sharing your 06:36
insights thanks Lisa it was great to 06:39
talk about this and I hope it helps some 06:42
people out there take that first 06:44
step I'm sure it will and to everyone 06:45
listening remember action over 06:49
overthinking start small stay consistent 06:52
and most importantly don't be afraid to 06:55
fail that's how we learn and grow thanks 06:58
for tuning in and we'll see you next 07:01
time on the simple English podcast take 07:03

[Music] 07:07
everyone all right it's time to learn 07:10
some important vocabulary related to the 07:12
topic the first word of today is 07:15
overthink it means to think about 07:18
something too much especially in a way 07:21
that makes it more complicated or 07:23
stressful than it needs to be example I 07:25
I tend to overthink every decision which 07:29
makes it harder for me to move forward 07:31
next word is procrastinate it means to 07:34
delay or postpone doing something often 07:37
because of fear lack of motivation or 07:40
distraction example instead of taking 07:43
action I procrastinated on starting my 07:46
project for 07:48
weeks next word is paralyze it means to 07:50
cause someone or something to become 07:53
unable to move or act often due to fear 07:55
anxiety or indecision 07:58
example the fear of failing can paralyze 08:00
you making it impossible to take the 08:03
first step next word is 08:05
momentum it means the force or energy 08:07
gained by an object or person as they 08:10
continue to move forward or make 08:13
progress example after completing the 08:15
first task I gained momentum and 08:19
finished the entire project in one day 08:21
the last word is fear of 08:24
failure it means the anxiety or worry 08:27
about not succeeding or making mistakes 08:30
which can prevent someone from taking 08:33
action example his fear of failure held 08:35
him back from starting his own business 08:39
for 08:41

Jeff
