The European Union is accelerating the 00:00
use of AI, drones, robots, and 00:01
autonomous systems in defense. A notable 00:04
point here is that beyond investing in 00:06
new technologies, the EU is also 00:08
changing how they are tested and 00:10
developed, drawing more directly on 00:12
lessons from the conflict in Ukraine. 00:15
One of the key initiatives is the Brave 00:17
Tech EU, a defense technology 00:19
partnership between the European Union 00:21
and Ukraine. The program brings together 00:24
Ukraine's ability to develop and adapt 00:26
technology rapidly on the battlefield 00:28
with Europe's research, investment, and 00:31
industrial capacity. Uh companies, 00:33
startups, and uh tech teams can test 00:35
emerging systems with military forces in 00:37
conditions close to real combat. In 00:40
August, the EU opened a new Brave Tech 00:43
EU selection round. Trials include 00:45
autonomous and swarm attack drones 00:48
operating under electronic jamming, 00:50
ground sensor networks, and systems 00:52
linking target detection directly to 00:55
combat platforms. A key requirement is 00:57
that technologies can be adapted in the 01:00
field through software updates, payload 01:01
changes, or hardware fixes and quickly 01:04
returned to testing. The trials are 01:07
expected to take place in Germany and 01:09
Romania this November with armed forces 01:11
directly involved. 01:14
There is a broader shift taking place in 01:18
Europe's defense thinking. Military 01:20
technology must not only be advanced to 01:22
but also developed, tested, and adapted 01:25
at a faster rate. Yet, turning a 01:27
promising technology into something that 01:29
can be deployed at scale remains a major 01:31
challenge. Our Europe correspondent 01:33
reports. 01:35
>> Robots, drones, artificial intelligence. 01:41
Europe has no shortage of technologies 01:45
that could shape the next generation of 01:47
weapons. Germany and other EU countries 01:49
are strong in precision engineering, 01:52
automation, sensors, robotics, and 01:54
dual-use technologies, but Ukraine has 01:57
exposed a critical weakness. Advanced 02:00
technology alone does not guarantee 02:02
battlefield advantage. A highly 02:04
sophisticated system may have little 02:06
impact if it takes years to develop and 02:08
can only be produced in small numbers. 02:11
By contrast, drones and electronic 02:14
warfare systems may need to be 02:16
redesigned within weeks as new 02:18
countermeasures emerge. That reality is 02:20
forcing Europe to rethink how defense 02:23
technology is developed. 02:25
>> Obviously, there is one objective that 02:27
we're having to on our side is to create 02:29
synergies between the tech industry and 02:32
the defense industry. Uh this has been 02:34
also highlighted in the industry 02:36
transformation roadmap. So, what is the 02:38
objective here is that of course we want 02:40
AI and tech to be embraced by the 02:43
defense industry. This is needed. We see 02:45
it in Ukraine on a daily basis, but all 02:48
of this has to be done in um um a secure 02:50
and in a responsible way. 02:53
>> But, AI only becomes military power when 02:55
it can move from the laboratory to the 02:58
production line. 03:00
That transition has often been slow in 03:01
Europe. 03:03
Testing, procurement, and large-scale 03:04
production can take years. The EU is now 03:06
trying to bring startups, civilian 03:09
technology companies, and dual-use firms 03:11
closer to the defense sector. At the 03:14
same time, it is deepening cooperation 03:16
with Ukraine, where technologies are 03:19
being tested and adapted directly 03:21
through battlefield experience. 03:23
>> And we can provide both 03:27
defense industrial bases with the 03:29
impetus needed to decisively step up 03:32
investment and production. 03:35
>> This is where the competition is also 03:38
changing. 03:40
The question is no longer simply who has 03:41
the better AI model or the smarter 03:45
robot. It is who can turn those 03:48
technologies into hundreds or thousands 03:50
of systems fast enough, cheaply enough, 03:53
and with the ability to keep improving 03:55
them as the battlefield changes. 03:57
Military strength was one measure mainly 04:00
by the number of tanks, aircrafts, or 04:03
missile a country possesses. AI is 04:05
adding a new measure, the speed at which 04:08
technology can be turned into 04:11
operational capability. For Europe, the 04:13
race is therefore not only about 04:16
building smarter system, it is also 04:17
about producing them faster, in greater 04:20
numbers, and adapting them more quickly 04:23
than the adversary. 04:25

Brave Tech EU,
Brave Tech EU
directly involved.
forcing Europe to rethink how defense
of this has to be done in um um a secure
with Ukraine, where technologies are
