A breathing body, an open sky

Janela debruçada para a vida

A window leaning out to life

There’s silent pain deep inside

O passo da coragem em casa escura

A brave step in a dark house

E, aberta, uma varanda para o mundo

And an open balcony to the world

Existe a noite

There’s night

O riso e a voz refeita à luz do dia

Laughter and voices renewed by daylight

A festa da Senhora da Agonia

The feast of Our Lady of Anguish

E o cansaço

And exhaustion

Do corpo que adormece em cama fria

Of a body sleeping in a cold bed

Existe um rio

There’s a river

A sina de quem nasce fraco ou forte

The fate of the weak or the strong born into it

O risco, a raiva e a luta de quem cai

The risk, the rage, the fight of those who fall

Ou que resiste

Or stand their ground

Que vence ou adormece antes da morte

Who win or drift away before death

A dor que sei de cor, mas não recito

The pain I know by heart but don’t recite

E os sonos inquietos de quem falha

And the restless sleeps of those who fail

A rua e o pregão de uma varina

The street and the call of a market woman

E um barco assoprado a todo o pano

And a boat full of wind at all sails

O canto em vozes juntas, vozes certas

Voices singing together, voices true

Canção de uma só letra

A song of just one letter

E um só destino a embarcar

And one single destiny to sail

No cais da nova nau das descobertas

At the dock of the new world’s discovery
