The march to the Northwest in 1947

Quang Dũng joined the Tây Tiến army.

A year later, the poem was written at Phù Lưu Chanh.

"Remembering Tây Tiến" was the original title.

Mã River is far away, oh Tây Tiến!

I miss the forested mountains and the carefree play.

Mist covers the weary troops at Sài Khao.

Mường Lát blossoms return in the hazy night.

Climbing the winding, steep slopes.

Heo draws the cloud's breath, the gun sniffs the sky.

A thousand fathoms up, a thousand fathoms down,

Whose home is Pha Luông, with rain far out at sea.

Comrade Dãi Dầu can no longer move forward,

Collapsed with gun and hat, leaving life behind!

Evening after evening, the mighty waterfall roars,

Night after night, the Mường Hịch tigers tease the people.

I miss, oh Tây Tiến, the rice steaming in smoke,

Mai Chau's season smells of sweet sticky rice.

The camp ignites a lantern festival,

Look, she’s in a silk shirt—since when?

The flute lifts a gentle tune for the shy maiden,

Music returns to Viên Chăn, shaping a poetic soul.

He goes to Châu Mộc in that evening mist,

Do you see the wandering soul on the distant shore?

Do you miss the figure on the lone tree,

The flood of water carries the swaying flowers?

The Tây Tiến soldiers have shaven heads,

The green troops, fierce as tigers,

Sharp eyes send dreams across the border,

Night dreams of Hanoi's graceful and fragrant beauty.

Scattered border graves in distant lands,

The battlefield takes them, showing no mercy to youthful lives.

Our coats replace the sunshine, we return to the earth,

Mã River roars a solitary march.

Tây Tiến, those who left made no promises,

The road climbs into the deep, a solitary fragment.

Who went to Tây Tiến that spring,

The soul goes to Sầm Nứa but never returns smoothly.

Mai Châu mùa em thơm nếp xôi.

Khèn lên man điệu nàng e ấp,

Nhạc về Viên Chăn xây hồn thơ.

Người đi Châu Mộc chiều sương ấy,

Có thấy hồn lau nẻo bến bờ?

Có nhớ dáng người trên độc mộc,

Trôi dòng nước lũ hoa đong đưa?

Tây Tiến đoàn binh không mọc tóc,
